SYNOPSIS

Fuuko (or Fuu-chan for friends) is a lively girl starting her first year of highschool. Her life is turned upside down by the arrival of her new neighbors: the bish?nen Shinpo cousins, Daiya and Ichi.

Fuuko initially falls for the playboy Daiya. Unfortunately, her first love is an unrequited love. Daiya claims he does not know what 'being in love' feels like. Suffering from her first heartbreak, she receives unexpected support from Ichi. Although he seems cold, Ichi actually is in love with Fuuko. The two spend more and more time together, and Fuuko discovers she has feelings for Ichi too. Only 'official' confessions away from being a couple, a woman from Ichi's past shows up. Iori-san used to work for the Shinpo family company. Back then, Ichi had fallen in love with her (even though she had a boyfriend, and was some years older than him). His infatuation was big enough to worry his parents, who had her fired. Now that she's back in his life, Ichi's feelings turn to her again. Not even his budding relationship with Fuuko can lessen his need to be with Iori. Fuuko can't deal with this and they part ways. Fuuko is heartbroken again, but this time the pain runs much deeper. Her love for Ichi was more serious than her former crush on Daiya. Ironically, it's Daiya who supports her through these hard times. Ichi spends his free time with Iori, and Daiya tries his hardest to distract Fuuko. Slowly, Daiya is beginning to understand 'what it is to be in love', as he is falling in love with Fuuko. But she can't return his feelings, she is not over Ichi yet. At New Year, Daiya asks Fuuko if she wants to go out with him. Taking a fresh start, Fuuko accepts. Meanwhile, Ichi says goodbye to Iori, as he finally understands she only sees him as a little brother, while the one she really loves is her boyfriend. Fuuko and Daiya are getting along fairly well as a couple although sometimes Fuuko thinks of Ichi, remembering her lost love for him.

Then at the end of Volume 14, Fuuko is speaking with Ichi in the classroom when she falls and they accidentally kiss. Although the only person who saw was Fuuko's friend, Fuuko is extremely worried about Daiya finding out as she can't work up the courage to tell him honestly. She goes to see Ichi and begs him not to tell Daiya that it happened. Ichi agrees, but the cousins have a misunderstanding which leads Daiya to realize that something happened between Ichi and Fuuko. He finally confronts Fuuko about it and asks her why she didn't tell him from the beginning. Afterwards, they have a fight and don't talk to each other. The next night Fuuko comes out of her window and sees Ichi. They start a conversation, but as they were talking, Daiya sees the two of them. He hides behind a car and thinks that Fuuko still has feelings for Ichi. Daiya, the next day, asks Ichi about any romantic feelings between Ichi and Fuuko, which causes a fight between the two cousins. Later, while Daiya is at work he is hit by a truck and is rushed to the hospital. Meanwhile Fuuko is making a knitted cap for Daiya.

Although at the point Fuuko doesn't find out about the accident, she soon does and makes her way to the hospital with the knitted cap. Daiya is confirmed to be fine, but gets angry at Fuuko accusing her that she still has feelings for Ichi. Fuuko throws the knitted cap at him and claims that she doesn't know what her feelings are at this point but when she was knitting that cap all she thought about was Daiya.

The manga continues with the three friends continuing to be friends and getting along once again. At this point of the manga it leaves of with the secretary of student council seen to be copying Fuuko previous day's hairstyle. Guessed to be because of jealousy of Fuuko's friendliness of the two boys. The manga has recently begun to continue the plot from this point onwards.

Episode 1 synopsis/recap/summary:

Episode summary:

We open this series with the main characters as children. Hu Xiao Feng writes a letter to her future love and hides it in the apartment upstairs. We also see the cousins Xing Yi Cheng and Xing Da Ye together. Yi Cheng is hiding something as well. Da Ye complains about this, but Yi Cheng says he will only stop hiding his stuff when Da Ye stops taking it.

Fast forward to the present day and the Xing boys are told by their grandfather that he is sending them to Taipei (they are currently in Shanghai) to study and live on their own. They will have all the credit and debit cards cut off and will only receive a small stipend to cover basic necessities. I am not certain if this is just a test or if this has anything to do with the disastrous events of the prior year the grandfather alludes to. While packing, Yi Cheng (Aaron Yan of boy group Fahrenheit) looks at a mug before carefully packing it away. Da Ye (played by Calvin Chen of Fahrenheit) tries to cheer up his younger cousin by saying that they can start fresh in Taiwan and make new friends â€" the perfect remedy for forgetting ex-girlfriends.

It is Valentine’s Day and Xiao Feng and her two friends are depressed as they are eating in a restaurant surrounded by lovers while they only have each other. A fight breaks out between a man and his girlfriend and Xiao Feng comments on how at least they don’t have to put up with that, but her two friends would rather be fighting with a boyfriend than be in their current single state. Xiao Feng goes home only to find her older sister (a mangaka) and her mother (a professional taster) eating instant noodles as her dad (a cook & TV salesman) films a program selling cookware. Xiao Feng calls the program and tells her dad to make her mom and sister a special Valentine’s meal of egg fried rice. He agrees that he will do that when he is done and hangs up. The Hu family go to their individual rooms while the Xing cousins arrive in Taiwan.

They arrive at their lodging only to learn they do not have the keys to get in. Da Ye thought Yi Cheng had them and Yi Cheng thought Da Ye had them. While Da Ye tries to find a way to enter (making a lot of noise, causing the oldest Hu women to think there’s a burgular) Yi Cheng sees a light on by a window. He goes over to knock on it just as Mr. Hu arrives home. Xiao Feng opens the window (wearing a mask) thinking it is her father. She is startled to see Yi Cheng and screams, bringing Da Ye making her scream again which brings her father running. When her father gets to her window and demands to know who the two boys are, the cops show up.

Once things have been cleared up, the boys eat the egg friend rice Mr. Hu brought home for his eldest daughter and wife. They all apologize for the misunderstandings and Mr. Hu tells them how the landlord gave him the key for safe keeping until the boys arrived. Both Da Ye and Yi Cheng apologize for startling Xiao Feng. Da Ye then tells the Hus that they will be going to the university nearby, which is also Xiao Feng’s school. Da Ye is an economics major (ironic considering that Calvin Chen has Master’s in economics in real life) while Yi Cheng is studying human services â€" which happens to be Xiao Feng’s major. Xiao Feng is then tasked with showing the boys to school the next day. During the meal and conversation, Xiao Feng comes to like the animated, warm Da Ye, and the cool, distant Yi Cheng.

The next day, all the girls in the school are buzzing about the two new transfers. Hard to believe they’ve been in Taiwan only one day, but the rumors and their fans have built like crazy. Da Ye especially attracts girls. Xiao Feng tries to be friends with fellow classmate Yi Cheng, but he ignores her and cuts short all of her conversation attempts. After Yi Cheng leaves the classroom for a moment, Xiao Feng’s two friends pounce on her and begin asking questions, slightly disappointed to find out Xiao Feng’s being with the two new transfers is only coincidental. Xiao Feng looks across the way and notices that Da Ye’s classroom is the one right across from hers. Da Ye sees her and waves, thanking her for the fried rice (Taiwanese slang for making out). Xiao Feng loudly exclaims that it was egg fried rice, but students get the wrong idea, especially when Da Ye blurts out that they are living together. Not really, just in the same building. Poor Xiao Feng.

Xiao Feng and Yi Cheng have been grouped together to work on a project. They must visit an organization dealing with special needs kids (special as in either both parents or one is dead). Xiao Feng tries to be open and warm again, but Yi Cheng shuts her down again. When the time comes to interact with the children, Xiao Feng has fun playing with them while Yi Cheng just sits around looking at the reports for class. He then notices a child who is viciously stabbing the stuffed animals on the table. The child then notices the blindfolded Xiao Feng and goes to stab her with his pencil. Yi Cheng goes to intercept the child, taking his precious mug with him (why is he still carrying it?). He yells at the child, causing Xiao Feng to get angry with him. The boy starts crying and Xiao Feng demands he apologize. Yi Cheng doesn’t explain what was happening and just goes to turn away. Xiao Feng grabs his arm, sending the mug flying. It falls to the ground and shatters. Xiao Feng apologizes and goes to help, but Yi Cheng tells her to leave it while he picks up the pieces.

When their stint at the organization is over, it starts to rain. Yi Cheng asks if Xiao Feng has an umbrella. She replies no, and he hands her his backpack so he can take off his jacket. He then takes his bag back and runs off himself, leaving Xiao Feng alone, umbrellaless. This annoys Xiao Feng who thought that he was going to share his jacket with her. She makes it back to the college only to find Da Ye in the stairwell with a girl! The girl was crying and had earlier confessed to Da Ye that her boyfriend had just broken up with her. Wow. Da Ye just holds and comforts her and shoos Xiao Feng away. Needless to say, her first good impressions (after the initial horrified one) have been shattered.

When Xiao Feng gets home, Da Ye is busy in the Hu kitchen cooking a large, sumptuous meal. Yi Cheng gets upstairs and finds the place empty. He calls Da Ye about their stuff and Da Ye tells him to come down for dinner. Yi Cheng refuses, but Da Ye says he will get no supper if he doesn’t come, so come he does. The Hus are impressed with Da Ye’s cooking skills and are horrified to learn that he learned out to cook because his parents were always gone. Mrs. Hu asks if Yi Cheng can cook as well and he replies that he can only eat. Awkward. Mrs. Hu then says that is all she can do, in fact, she is a professional eater. She does taste tests and reviews. Da Ye asks for her opinion on his cooking and he gets full marks. Da Ye then says how much he enjoys eating with all the Hus (sans Mr. Hu) as he likes being with a large family.

The next day, the kids from the area find an abandoned puppy. Yi Cheng tells Xiao Feng to leave it alone as her kindness will only hurt it as she cannot keep it. She impresses Yi Cheng when she declares that she will do whatever it takes to find the puppy a home. And now we have a whole bunch of time devoted to her and Da Ye doing everything they can to find the puppy a home. Seriously? We have that much time devoted to a dog, but it is supposed to show the deepening affection Xiao Feng has for Da Ye who is warm, considerate, and thoughtful. His niceness and charm makes her think that he likes her too? Meanwhile, Yi Cheng observes the new closeness with what looks like jealousy. He also does some behind the scenes work to find the dog a home, too.

We have this big montage of scenes where Da Ye and Xiao Feng run all over town looking for a vet for the sick puppy. They even run in the pouring rain (Da Ye actually doing what Yi Cheng didn’t and holding his coat over both of them) until they find a place. Ye gads, talk about some over dramatic scenes right there. They act like new parents concerned over their newborn’s health. I am not an animal hater, but just the whole thing seemed blown out of proportion to the point of silliness. Anywho. Of course, they both get sick from that and end up missing school the next day with colds.

When Xiao Feng learns that Da Ye is sick, she goes upstairs with medicine and the porridge her dad made for her and takes care of Da Ye. After he ate and took the medicine, Xiao Feng goes to return home only to be stopped by Da Ye who doesn’t want her to go until he falls asleep. So, of course, she stays and then falls asleep herself. Yi Cheng goes home to find the apartment door cracked and Xiao Feng’s shoes outside. Instead of going in, he stays outside all afternoon until Xiao Feng wakes up. She checks the sleeping Da Ye’s temperature and then goes to leave. She is shocked when she opens the door only to have Yi Cheng fall inside. She is mortified to learn he stayed outside so they could have their “privacy.” Xiao Feng says she was only taking care of the sick Da Ye, but Yi Cheng just brushes her off. She angrily leaves only to have him call out to her and drop a pudding (parfait?) her way in thanks for taking care of his sick cousin.

And, yeah, what more to say? The dog finds a home, Xiao Feng is pretty certain that she does have feelings for Da Ye, though Yi Cheng warns her away from his cousin. Why? He knows Da Ye’s attitude towards girls, plus it looks like he’s got some of his own feelings starting for Xiao Feng as well.

Xiao Feng and Da Ye are surprised to find out that it was an internet ad that helped the puppy get a new home. Da Ye knows that it is his younger cousin’s doing and promises to cook a big dinner in celebration and thanks. Xiao Feng goes to their house to help out and goes and bugs Yi Cheng when he comes home. Yi Cheng says there is no thanks needed, he just helped the puppy, but still Da Ye wants to celebrate. Da Ye gets a call from his mom and Xiao Feng is noticeably relieved to hear it is just Da Ye’s mother. Yi Cheng watches while she intently listens to the conversation and you can tell he’s got some of his own jealousy going on.

End episode. Seriously. Most of the plot revolved around the dog and some of Yi Cheng’s flashbacks to a shadowy girlfriend and the trio’s relationships starting to get established. (synopsis/summary source: http://asianaddictsannon.wordpress.com/)

Episode 12 synopsis/recap/summary

Episode summary:

Kang Suk is upset that Jin Jin has a nosebleed, but she just laughs it off and goes to leave to finish delivering papers, but Kang Suk grabs her arm and asks if she is even getting enough sleep at night. Jin Jin says nothing and he tells her that she is his asset now, so she is no longer her own owner (if that makes any sense). He asks if she understands and Jin Jin asks if she can speak informally. This surprises Kang Suk, especially when Jin Jin knocks his hand away and says she is nobody’s asset. She is a singer who signed a contract with an agency, she did not sell herself to his company. It is her turn to ask if she understands. Kang Suk angrily replies that it is Jin Jin who doesn’t understand because a signed singer is an asset of the company and Double Sharp is in charge of nurturing Jin Jin. Jin Jin doesn’t back down and again insists that she is not just an asset. She then tells him that calling someone else an asset is the worse thing he could do, but Kang Suk says that is reality. Jin Jin replies that she doesn’t care about reality, she is no one’s asset so he needs to stop treating her at one. Kang Suk then says how can he when she’s not even taking proper care of herself and is getting nosebleeds. Jin Jin switches back to formal language and Kang Suk just cannot believe what she is doing. She then says she knows her body best and with working the amount of jobs she does in order to survive, she doesn’t get a lot of sleep and nosebleeds are bound to happen on occasion. Jin Jin says she can take care of herself and bids him good day to finish delivering newspapers. Kang Suk stares after her amazed and dumbfounded.

Jin Jin finishes that job and rushes home to pick up the kimbap from Oh. Eo Jin is up bright and early helping Oh make the kimbap. Jin Jin asks if Eo Jin is selling with her again and he says that he will sell kimbap until he needs to go to school. He then asks for 2 thousand won if he helps her sell all of it. Dong Ah comes out at this point and threatens Eo Jin. He has to go straight to school and can’t dawdle and sell kimbap. Eo Jin refuses and tells his uncles to stop interfering in other’s lives. Chun Bo Geun as Eo Jin is a scene stealer. The kid can act and is great at seeming more like and adult than his uncle.

Eo Jin and Jin Jin are busy selling kimbap when Kang Suk happens to drive by and spot Jin Jin. He cannot believe that after what he said earlier that she is hard at work at yet another job. He stops and asks her what she is doing and she says that she is obviously selling kimbap. He then asks who Eo Jin is and Jin Jin replies that he is her loser friend’s nephew. Kang Suk sighs and says that Jin Jin sure has a lot of jobs. Jin Jin then tries to entice him into buying kimbap for breakfast since he probably hasn’t eaten yet. Kang Suk then asks if she is a robot made of steel. Jin Jin thinks he is teasing her and says that she is sure she is a 100% human. Kang Suk then asks how much for all that she has left. Such a typical drama moment. This surprises Jin Jin and she asks if he’s really hungry. Of course he isn’t, this is his way of trying to get Jin Jin to rest a little by buying all the kimbap she is working hard to sell. Jin Jin quickly calculates the total, but gives him a 1,000 won discount for being her president. Kang Suk returns to his car and wonders why he did what he did. He looks out the window and sees Eo Jin and Jin Jin jumping around happily and he says they respectfully call him president all the while they take advantage of him, but he smiles. Jin Jin makes him do a lot of new things.

Back at the house, Jin Jin and gang are busy eating and Jin Jin tells Dong Ah that he is in charge of making rice now that she signed with the company and has to go to practice. Dong Ah gets a call from Yoon Seo, but ignores it making his friends wonder why. Dong Chul says it must be love since he is having a lover’s quarrel and Dong Ah nearly bites his head off. Meanwhile, Yoon Seo is listlessly going through the shop her father gave her to manage (she is supposed to be listening about current store promotions), wondering why Dong Ah is not answering.

Kang Suk returns and Ji Young asks if his golf meeting went well and if it is confirmed that the American Idol-like program is definitely going to happen. Kang Suk says nothing is definite as of yet. This frustrates Ji Young. Kang Suk then offhandedly then gives the staff the bag of kimbap he bought from Jin Jin and tells them to enjoy it. Ji Young is surprised that Kang Suk bought such a large amount for the staff. LOL, of she only knew. Meanwhile, Jin Jin is busy cleaning the rehearsal room. Ji Young goes to find her and ask why the kids aren’t there yet. Jin Jin then replies that the kids told her it is the rookie’s duty to do the cleaning. Ji Young says they are teaching Jin Jin a lesson and they must be mocking her as well. Jin Jin just laughs it off and says that she is used to such treatment. In all her years, there isn’t much she hasn’t come across. Ji Young asks of Jin Joo and Jin Jin replies that she is still the same. Ji Young says that Jin Joo was really something else on stage and Jin Jin agrees that she was always mesmerized when her sister took the stage. Ji Young then says that Jin Jin can be like that, too. Jin Jin asks if that is really true and Ji Young replies that she will do everything she can to see to it that it does happen. Jin Jin then asks if Ji Young was really close to Jin Joo. Ji Young then tells the story of how she was always berated and scolded and how Jin Joo was kind to her, which helped Ji Young get through the initial tough period of work. Jin Jin says that must be why Ji Young insisted on making her a singer. Ji Young says she is not that kind â€" she wants to make Jin Jin a singer because she sees her potential. She then leaves and Jin Jin goes back to cleaning enthusiastically.

Jin Jin goes to throw out garbage and is seen by Kang Suk. He asks her if she is there to sing or clean. Jin Jin then asks if he doesn’t think people who put their best effort into everything will succeed. She then says she is off to practice and bids him farewell. Kang Suk then receives a call from his father who reminds him that today is Jung Nan’s birthday and as a son, how could Kang Suk forget? Lee then tells Kang Suk to be there for Jung Nan since he has to go to Jeju and can’t.

At the nightclub, Tae Soon rushes over to Woo Hyun and apologizes for acting like she did the other night when she was drunk. Woo Hyun agreed that Tae Soon was a little crazy and tells her everything will be all right as long as she doesn’t do it again. He walks away after greeting Jugn Nan and Tae Soon says he just doesn’t understand her heart. Jung Nan smiles and says then Tae Soon should just make him understand and walks away as well. Tae Soon gives her a very dirty look behind her back. I guess she still sees Jung Nan as a threat.

Jin Jin is going to the club with flowers for Jin Joo when Yoon Seo pops out of a cab and greets her. Jin Jin asks if she is there to meet Dong Ah and Yoon Seo says that she is there to learn noodle making from Oh. Jin Jin teases her and pokes her waist, but Yoon Seo doesn’t really react at all. Jin Jin says she was just teasing and asks if she offended Yoon Seo who then confesses that she has never had a friend to tease and play with. This shocks Jin Jin â€" she can’t believe how different a world Yoon Seo lives in. Yoon Seo then confesses she envies Jin Jin and Dong Ah’s close friendship and she also says that Dong Ah is the nicest man in her eyes. Jin Jin says that the two must be dating for Yoon Seo to say that. Yoon Seo’s face falls and Jin Jin can’t believe they aren’t officially dating yet. Jin Jin then says that Dong Ah may be a loser, but he is a good man so Yoon Seo should do Jin Jin a favor and stay by him forever.

At the club, Eo Jin and Jin Joo are working on Eo Jin’s homework. Dong Ah and Dong Chul fight about the right way to spell “all right” when Yoon Seo arrives with Jin Jin. Dong Ah is not happy to see that Yoon Seo has come back. He then asks how to spell the word after he misspells it. Yoon Seo spells it correctly and is praised by Dong Chul. Jin Jin then chides Dong Ah for not knowing, but is silenced when asked if she knew how it was spelled then. Yoon Seo then tells Oh she is there and Oh is surprised to see her, thinking that Yoon Seo wasn’t going to show up anymore. Yoon Seo says she hasn’t learned how to make noodles yet, so she can’t leave. Jin Jin pokes Dong Ah and tells him to stop playing hard to get before heading into the club.

Jin Jin overhears Jung Nan talking to Kang Suk about her birthday. Jin Jin is surprised to hear it is Jung Nan’s birthday. Jung Nan says not to make a fuss and to come over to her place after work. Jin Jin asks if its to celebrate and Jung Nan says she wishes to give Jin Jin clothes that she no longer wears. This excites Jin Jin who sits down to tell her just what a kind person Kang Suk is being. Jung Nan is shocked to hear that Kang Suk is being nice to anyone, let alone Jin Jin. Jung Nan then says that Kang Suk is offended if he is referred to as only the second-coldest person in the world. Jin Jin says it must all be a front, because deep down he is really nice.

At the Yi house, Yoon Seo’s mother is upset that Yoon Seo is not home to meet Ji Suk like she is supposed to. Ji Suk smiles and says he knows she is avoiding him because Yoon Seo was told he was coming over. So why doesn’t he take the hint already and just leave the poor girl alone? I really don’t like this selfish arse of a man. Yi then says that Yoon Seo is just shy. Ji Suk takes his leave, upsetting Yi that he won’t wait any longer for Yoon Seo. And what is Yoon Seo doing? She is flubbing up making noodles. She overcooked them. Yoon Seo apologizes to Oh who says its no big deal and gives Dong Ah the noodles to eat. He refuses saying he is full. He then calls her out and says he will take her home. Yoon Seo doesn’t want to leave quite yet, but Dong Ah refuses to let her stay any longer and gets Dong Chul to man the door while he walks Yoon Seo home. Dong Chul runs off his mouth again and Dong Ah refrains from hitting him. This makes Dong Chul says that Dong Ah has really changed since meeting Yoon Seo.

On the way home, Yoon Seo asks if Dong Ah is angry. He says that he isn’t and asks why she would think that. Yoon Seo replies that he is not answering her calls. Dong Ah says he is sleeping. Yoon Seo knows he is lying and Dong Ah then asks her to stop coming as she should have seen enough of his world by now. For Yoon Seo it might be a festival she is enjoying for the time being, but it is his and his friends’ lives. Yoon Seo then says he definitely must be mad at her. Dong Ah again refutes that is not true. Yoon Seo says she started working a job and had something going on the other night, but Dong Ah cuts her off and says she doesn’t need to explain to a guy like him. Yoon Seo says she is saying it because she wants to. She then says she didn’t come the other night because she had an obligation, not because she didn’t want to. Yoon Seo asks if she can’t still come and Dong Ah replies with if he told her to stop, would she. Yoon Seo says that if he really wanted her to, she wouldn’t. Dong Ah then says to come until she finishes learning how to make noodles. Yoon Seo smiles and happily replies that it can take her a long time to learn how to do it, which means he’s stuck with her for now. They reach the Yi house and Dong Ah tells her to go on in. Yoon Seo says she knows she is just thinking of herself and knows that she is being selfish, but if he can only put on with it a little longer. Dong Ah doesn’t say anything to this declaration and just bids her good night. On his way home, Dong Ah says that when Yoon Seo stops coming, he will not wait for her and just continue on with his life.

Jin Jin, Jin Joo, and Jung Nan arrive at Jung Nan’s place and Jin Jin cannot believe what a nice place she has. Jin Jin says that she will make Jung Nan seaweed soup as soon as they get in, but Jung Nan says that she has none. Jin Jin then insists that she will sing happy birthday. Jung Nan smiles and says it is up to her. When they get inside, there is Kang Suk waiting with a cake for his mother. Jung Nan is shocked to see him there. He replies that he timed it so he would be there as she got off of work. Jung Nan asks why he is there and Jin Jin says how can he not be there when it is his mother’s birthday. Jung Nan says nothing to that and Jin Joo comes in and begins remarking at how beautiful everything is. Jung Nan then blows out the candles and Jin Jin asks where Kang Suk’s presents are and Jung Nan says she needs nothing from her son, it’s just enough that he actually remembered her birthday and brought a cake. Jin Jin then presents her own gift to Jung Nan who is greatly touched by it and shocked that Jin Jin had enough time to prepare a gift. Jung Nan thanks her for the pretty hairpiece and Jin Jin replies it isn’t the most elegant as it only cost 10,000 won. Jung Nan happily tells her that it is really nice. Jin Joo then drops her tea cup and Jin Jin immediately jumps in and keeps Jin Joo from hurting herself. Trying to clean up the glass, Jin Jin cuts her finger and Jung Nan rushes for the first aid kit. Jin Joo apologizes and goes to help, but Jin Jin again stops her. Kang Suk yells at her to stop and calls her an idiot for still trying to clean up the mess with her bare hands. Jin Joo says that Jin Jin isn’t an idiot, she’s an idiot, but Jin Jin insists that her elder sister isn’t. Jung Nan comes in just as Kang Suk brings out a dustpan and broom and begins sweeping up the mess. Jung Nan is shocked to see her son doing such a thing and Jin Jin apologizes for causing him so much trouble. Kang Suk says it’s all right since she knows she is giving him a hard time. Jung Nan then thanks Jin Jin for showing her scenes that she has never gotten to see before causing Kang Suk to sigh while Jin Jin gets her finger bandaged.

Jin Jin thanks Jung Nan for the beautiful clothes and Jung Nan requests that Kang Suk take the two girls home since they live in the same neighborhood. Without complaining, Kang Suk actually complies. In the car, Jin Jin tells her sister to lay down and sleep and Jin Joo asks her little sister for a song as she likes to hear her sing. This makes Jin Jin happy and she agrees to sing her a song while Kang Suk listens and sneaks peeks in the review mirror. Jin Jin just keeps getting under his skin in many different ways. Jin Jin tries to wake Jin Joo up, but Jin Joo doesn’t want too. Kang Suk then pops the trunk and helps Jin Jin get all of her new clothes out. He then asks why she doesn’t quit her job delivering newspapers as humans need sleep. Jin Jin says she knows and she manages to sleep here and there, so he doesn’t need to worry. Kang Suk then says that he will sue her for compensation if she collapses from exhaustion. Aww, what a sweet way to show you care :P . Jin Jin then calls him wicked and takes Jin Joo into the house while Kang Suk watches them go in with another big sigh.

Inside, Dong Ah is laying outside on the table instead of sleeping. Jin Jin asks why he isn’t sleeping yet and sends Jin Joo into bed so she can talk to Dong Ah. He asks if she got a lot of clothes and she says yes â€" high quality ones at that. Dong Ah says that mother and son are just alike, how can they afford such clothes when Kang Suk is only a lowly driver. Jin Jin goes to correct him, but bites her tongue instead. Not exactly sure why, but she keeps his real identity from Dong Ah. Jin Jin then starts poking him and says she asked Yoon Seo a favor. Dong Ah pops up and asks what she did. Jin Jin says she asked Yoon Seo to stay by him forever, which means, basically, marriage if Yoon Seo wants. Dong Ah immediately tells Jin Jin off for doing such a rash thing. Jin Jin says she did it for him so he shouldn’t yell. Dong Ah says she can’t do such nonsense and of course, the two start screaming and fighting. It’s been awhile. LOL. I love watching the two fight. They are so cute. The whole house wakes up and tries to separate the two with no luck. Oh then comes out and throws water on them asking why they have to do such things. Yoon Bae and Jong Bum say that it was too quiet and that it was bound to happen and then say the two are a match made in heaven. I think they are better off as friends. If they were lovers, they would probably kill each other. Jin Jin is back in her room and complains that Dong Ah should just say thanks. Meanwhile, Dong Chul tells Dong Ah in their room that he thinks if Yoon Seo wasn’t around, Jin Jin noona would be Dong Ah’s ideal partner. Dong Ah tells him to shut up ans sleep. He then grumbles that Jin Jin’s a wench who is no help to him.

The next day Kang Suk returns from his run and is happy to see that Jin Jin took his advice â€" until he walks in through the gate and sees the papers lying there. He picks them up and heads in. He is surprised to see Ji Suk up already and drinking coffee. Ji Suk then asks what Jung Nan said. Kang Suk says nothing and Ji Suk then says since Jung Nan is a woman who lives for love, what does she think of her son’s arranged marriage. Kang Suk doesn’t rise to the jibe and goes to wash up. Ji Suk can’t leave it alone and says the more his brother acts as he does, the more he doesn’t want to let Yoon Seo go to a guy like him. Oh, like Ji Suk is really any better? Kang Suk gives his brother a slight glare before silently entering the bathroom.

During breakfast at the Oh house, Jong Bum is excited to hear this woman owns department stores and Oh comments on him trying to live off a rich widow. Jong Bum states he isn’t a gigolo and Yoon Bae says he knows nothing of love. Jong Bum then lets it slip that Yoon Bae was once married and this shocks everyone. It seems like only Jong Bum knew. Jong Bum immediately knows he made a mistake and Yoon Bae angrily leaves the table after calling him a jerk. After Yoon Bae leaves, Oh asks if he really was married. Oh then asks if he is a widow and Jong Bum said it would be better if he was before leaving himself to apologize to Yoon Bae who ignores him. Dong Ah follows Yoon Bae outside and hears Yoon Bae’s story for himself. Yoon Bae tells the story of how he fell in love with a rich girl and ran away with her. They lived together for a year and a half, but the girl couldn’t handle it. Apparently love was not enough and the two began to grow apart so Yoon Bae let her go and realized that people from different classes just can’t live together. Dong Ah did not need to hear this story and come up with even more reasons not to be with his beloved Yoon Seo.

Yoon Seo finds a beautiful designer purse and wishes to give it as a gift. Meanwhile, Jin Jin is with the vocal coach who is criticizing her rhythm while singing “Indian Doll.” The teacher keeps stopping and complaining about her bad rhythmic sense. Jin Jin says she understands what he is saying, but that she just can’t seem to get it. He asks her how she will get along at auditions when she is like this and Jin Jin replies she has only been training for a few days to which the coach says that is nothing to be proud of and the two start again. Practice ends and Jin Jin begs him to go longer, but he refuses. Kang Suk sees the two and stops them. He asks for Jin Jin’s lessons to be extended by an extra half hour. The coach complains, but Kang Suk insists and the two go back into practice. The coach asks what the relationship is between the two and Jin Jin is horrified to learn that he thinks they are a couple. She vehemently insists that they have nothing between them and he asks her why she is getting so worked up when a simple no would have sufficed.

Ji Suk meets Jung for lunch and confesses that he knows Yoon Seo which surprises Jung, but not as much as Ji Suk’s next statement does. Ji Suk says they met on the plan home from the US and that he has feelings for Yoon Seo. Jung doesn’t quite know what to say and tries to explain about marrying Kang Suk to Yoon Seo, but Ji Suk says he knows this already. Jung asks why Ji suk is doing this when he knows about the arrangement. Ji Suk says the two barely know each other, so he should have a chance with Yoon Seo since he genuinely cares for her. Oh bugger, the man is doing everything he can.

Back at Double Sharp, Kang Suk leaves his office and overhears Jin Jin practicing. He looks into the practice room and notices her practicing all alone. He walks in and asks what she is doing alone. Jin Jin says she is practicing a song and Kang Suk says she has no night lessons scheduled. Jin Jin asks for the time and is surprised to find out it is already 8pm. She has a live show at the club to prepare for and needs to pick up flowers for Jin Joo as well. What will she do? Kang Suk then ends up driving her. She tells him to let her off at the station, but then Jin Jin’s stomach growls and he asks if she has eaten. Jin Jin, embarrassed, says that she forgot to eat. Kang Suk then takes her for dinner and says that if they eat fast, she can still make it in time. Jin Jin starts eating and then says that when she called him a jerk last time, she wants to apologize for that. Why? She realized that he isn’t all that bad. He tells her to just focus on eating, but he’s happy to hear that she doesn’t think he’s a jerk anymore.

Kang Suk drops her off and Jin Jin thanks him for his help. Dong Ah grabs her arm and asks if Kang Suk dropped her off and why? Jin Jin says it just happened that way and Jin Joo asks where the roses are. Jin Jin apologizes and tells Jin Joo to go home with Eo Jin before rushing into the club. Yoon Seo then shows up and apologizes for being late as well. Oh tells her it is okay as it is not a cooking academy. Yoon Seo then smiles at Dong Ah before going to work.

Kang Suk arrives home to see a worried Song pacing and to hear his father yelling at his brother. Why? Jung told Lee what Ji Suk pulled and Lee is bawling Ji Suk out for doing such a stupid thing to his brother. Ji Suk then says that Kang Suk doesn’t love Yoon Seo. Lee can’t believe his ears and Mrs. Song rushes in to find out just what is going on. Ji Suk asks why its okay for Kang Suk to be with Yoon Seo and not him as Kang Suk only see Yoon Seo for her dowry. Lee then hits Ji Suk who throws up his parents’ own failure of marriage (that was arranged as well) â€" definitely not a way to get into his father’s good graces. Ji Suk then asks if he wants Kang Suk to live the same life as him. Lee asks if Ji Suk understands what he has done and Ji Suk says he does and yells that he is doing everything in his power to get the woman he loves before storming out. He sees Kang Suk, who remains silent and says that he will surpass him. Kang Suk clenches his jaw and then goes out, driving like a mad man while Song confronts Ji Suk. Song is not happy to hear that Ji Suk did such a thing and Ji Suk is unhappy that his mom is not on his side.

At the club, Yoon Seo presents Jin Jin with the designer bag. Jin Jin is touched and can’t believe that such a thing is hers. Dong Ah says she didn’t have to do that and Yoon Seo replies that Jin Jin is her friend. Dong Chul says that he wants to be her friend, too and Yoon Seo promises to bring him something at a later date. Oh watches one, disbelieving that Yoon Seo is going as far as trying to get close to Dong Ah’s friends as well. Yoon Seo gets a call and then heads home to her unhappy father. Jung then asks if his daughter knows Ji Suk. Yi goes to respond and Jung is surprised to hear that Yi knows him as well. He then grills Yoon Seo about him. Yoon Seo admits to knowing who he is and Jung asks what relationship they have and if she knows he is Kang Suk’s brother. Yoon Seo says she knows all this and Jung says he heard something embarrassing from Ji Suk. Yoon Seo insists that she has no relationship with him and then says she doesn’t want to get married.

At Oh’s house, Dong Ah comes out and sees Jin Jin hugging her purse. He calls her crazy and Jin Jin says it is the first present she has received since getting a giant stuffed bear from her sister twenty years ago. Jin Jin then says she hopes he and Yoon Seo can be together for a long time. Dong Ah snaps, but Jin Jin says he can yell all he wants as she won’t fight him as a favor for Yoon Seo that night. Dong Ah then calls her and the rest of the house snobs because if you give them something they become drooling fools. Jin Jin asks if Dong Ah thinks it’s all because of the purse. Dong Ah says yes and Jin Jin says that Yoon Seo’s feelings must be real if she’s showing such attention to Jin Jin. Dong Ah doesn’t know what to say to this.

Back at the Lee household, Song goes to Lee and asks if they stop the wedding. Song will work on getting Ji Suk to give up on Yoon Seo, so Lee should do the same with Kang Suk. Lee says nothing. Kang Suk arrives home and looks unhappily at the house. Instead of going inside, he stays and sleeps in his car. Jin Jin, delivering papers, is surprised to see him sleeping in his car. She knocks on his window and asks if he slept in the car and if he had been drinking. Kang Suk ignores her and turns to go in, but stops when Jin Jin says that life is hard for everyone. He turns around and looks at her while she continues. She doesn’t know why, but Kang Suk always looks like he is carrying the world’s misery, but he still has his mother and is rich. Jin Jin turns to leave and Kang Suk angrily grabs her arm. He then demands to know what Jin Jin knows.

End episode.

Episode 5 summary/recap/synopsis:

In the outcast class (which has been graffiti’d with slurs against Hye-mi), Oh-hyuk sighs at Hye-mi’s rash challenge that she’ll beat Baek-hee in the upcoming evaluations. Stubbornly, Hye-mi insists she’ll succeed… then mumbles a quick “So please help me.”

Sam-dong makes a request for help, too, sharing an old saying his mother used to tell him: “If a wall appears, you can knock it on its side and it’ll become a bridge. If the three of us push with all our strength, can’t we turn that little wall into a bridge?” Aw, you and your boyish idealism are adorable.

And so this motley group has its first goal: To make sure Hye-mi beats Baek-hee, and to get this trio out of this class and back into the idol-training sessions.

Er, make that quartet: The door opens and Pil-sook shyly joins them, having been knocked down to the loser class as well. The others gape to see that while she’s still chubby, she’s noticeably lost some weight â€" her beautification process has begun.

In the regular class, Madam Ends-Justify-The-Means motivates her class with threats to drop them into the misfit class, and dangles the carrot that a strong performance at the midterm evaluations could put them on the idol fast-track.

In-sung offers to treat Baek-hee in honor of her finding her pendant, and she makes the excuse to invite Jin-gook, because he helped her get it back. Ah, yet another love triangle brews. You’ve got the misfit class triangle (the boys and Hye-mi), the catfight triangle (the girls and Jin-gook), and now the b-boy triangle (the boys and Baek-hee). Where’s the Sam-dong love? With all these raging hormones flying around, you’d think it wouldn’t be so hard to get ONE set of feelings successfully reciprocated, but the K-drama laws of Fate scoff at the natural laws of physics.

While Hye-mi naps in class, Sam-dong hovers tentatively with a band-aid, about to apply it to the cut on her forehead. Adorably, he falls back nervously the moment she opens her eyes and stammers an excuse.

Hye-mi takes the band-aid and thanks him. Sam-dong works up his nerve, and tells her that he’ll protect her better next time.

Later that day, Oh-hyuk calls his students back to school; they aren’t allowed in the dance or music studios, so they have to sneak here after hours. The evaluations will be based on each student’s ability to convey emotion in their singing, and the Misfits need to practice.

Oh-hyuk has spied on Teacher Gong’s lessons with the regular class (…the Holograms?), stealing ideas for his own lessons. In this instance, they participate in exercises in acting and expressiveness: The instructor tells his class to imagine marrying the one you love (In-sung does this facing Baek-hee), only to have that person killed on your wedding night in a car accident. At the funeral, you discover your lover had another lover… your younger sibling. Until you wake up and realize it was just a dream. Are we sure we’re not in Makjang Drama Writing 101 instead?

Oh-hyuk leads his kids in the same lesson and praises Pil-sook for her emotional accessibility, then asks why Hye-mi didn’t participate. She replies, “I did.” Bwahaha â€" her blank face as plot point, I love it.

The lesson is cut short by Director Shi, who reminds them that they’re not allowed in the studios. Without anywhere else to go, Jin-gook leads them to his icy basement, and they clean the place up. But a more pressing hurdle remains: They need a real vocal teacher, not just phonecams of Teacher Gong.

Oh-hyuk has one idea, but it’s a long shot, since English teacher Jin-man hates his guts. Oh-hyuk presses, showing him the Dream High notes he’d written for a middle school homework assignment years ago, which President Jung had held onto all these years. Furthermore, he’d indicated Jin-man as the best coach.

Oh-hyuk makes a last-ditch plea to Jin-man, saying that he can’t let his kids turn out like him â€" Jin-man faltered because he trusted a fool like Oh-hyuk, and what if Oh-hyuk causes the kids to lose their opportunity as well? It makes a perverse kind of logic, but it also rubs at old wounds, and Jin-man belts him in the gut for that reminder. And then reluctantly agrees to do it for a raise.

Operation Terrorize Hye-mi continues, the latest graffiti mural depicting her as a grotesque demon and labeled as traitor and backstabber. Hye-mi asks Baek-hee if she did it, who turns up her nose at her rival. That snooty posture disappears the instant Baek-hee spies Jin-gook approaching; immediately adopting a wounded victim pose, she makes it seem like she’s being bullied.

She’s gratified when Jin-gook tells Hye-mi to cut it out, although he’s not doing it to defend Baek-hee; rather, he knows who the real culprit is.

He finds his buddy In-sung preparing to launch a raw egg at Hye-mi from afar, and says he recognized his handwriting. In-sung argues that Jin-gook had also found Hye-mi insufferable, and should thank him for giving her what she deserves.

Jin-gook hurls the egg at In-sung’s head (well, the wall by his head) and delivers a stern warning: “If you mess with Hye-mi again, you’re dead.” And… watching from around the corner is a displeased Baek-hee.

Jin-man begins his first lesson on the keyboard, but Sam-dong marvels at the nifty gadget and presses the keys, surprising Jin-man into asking, “You know chords?” Sam-dong asks, “What are chords?” and then produces another one, his fingers naturally finding the keys. Like a little boy discovering a grand new toy, he smiles, “If I push the keys, the sounds just come out pretty.”

Meta hilarity: The tune Jin-man starts to tap out is Park Jin-young’s own pop hit from the ’90s, “? ????” (Don’t Leave Me). [ Download ] Oh god, I love the meta.

Upon seeing Oh-hyuk, Jin-man stiffens; I love how obvious it is that these man-children just wanna be best friends again, even though Jin-man is trying to cling to his old hate. Aw. I can’t wait for them to kiss and make up already. YOU KNOW YOU WANNA.

As Jin-man leaves, Sam-dong picks up the melody from Jin-man’s very brief demonstration and starts singing along, “Don’t leave me…”

Kyung-jin impresses upon her class the importance of picking the right song in order to convey its emotion properly. Ah-jung whines that this task is too difficult, so Kyung-jin calls Oh-hyuk over and starts to flirt with him in front of the students. He takes it at face value and stammers that he likes another woman, and Kyung-jin flips her flirt mode off as quickly as she switched it on, having demonstrated the value of artful acting. She gives her class the assignment to act out song lyrics to get into the proper mood.

That gives Oh-hyuk another assignment to copy. Jin-man shows up at the rehearsal to scoff at Oh-hyuk’s pilfering of other teachers’ lessons, but the more important point is that he’s here to help. Ya big softie.

Jin-man instructs his students to act as though they’re really saying the words when they’re singing, and Kyung-jin’s students do the same. Both classes undergo acting exercises where they deliver song lyrics as monologues, with as much emotion as they can muster.

Jason picks a song begging a lover not to leave him, and I’m sure it’s no accident that Pil-sook’s lyrics form the other half of that conversation.

They, along with Baek-hee, have a pretty good grasp of emoting through song (Baek-hee’s impassioned monologue comes from “I will survive”).

On the other hand: Hye-mi doesn’t do so well. Her recitation is absurdly, hilariously flat â€" they’re the lyrics of her audition song (“Goose’s Dream”) â€" and she intones robotically, “I have a dream. I trust that dream. Ho-hum.” That last part may have been implied.

Jin-man urges her to draw out more emotion, but all Hye-mi succeeds in doing is repeating her monotone more loudly, so that she sounds like a whiny robot.

Hye-mi doesn’t even understand what’s wrong, nor does she know why she’d failed the audition. Oh-hyuk asks her what the “empty dream” in the song is, and she runs through the lyrics trying to remember, although Pil-sook can answer right away. Point made: She sang the song all this time not even being conscious of its meaning. He tells her that she’s much more musically talented than the others, but has not a fraction of their sensibility.

Hye-mi can pick up from watching Pil-sook that despite her own superior vocals, Pil-sook beats her in the emotion department. Hye-mi asks what Pil-sook thinks about as she sings, and gets back a simple answer: romance.

Pil-sook takes her to spy on Jason, explaining that while that they’re not dating, they’re in the process of getting to know each other. She giggles as she says that he opens doors for her, that he treats her particularly nicely, and that the song lyrics are like he’s singing to her. (Hye-mi retorts that this emotion is all a delusion.)

When Jason holds the door open for her with a smile, though, Hye-mi asks if he likes her. He explains that he’s friendly to everybody; it’s that thing you call good manners. Now, normally he’d have a very good point against the emotionally stunted Hye-mi Bot, but in this case she also has a point. His American idea of friendship is giving Korean girls the wrong idea, and she warns him that if he doesn’t want to be a jerk, he’d better watch it and not give nice girls false hopes. Beep beep boop.

Aw, Hye-mi’s actually looking out for Pil-sook. That’s sweet.

Jin-gook swipes Hye-mi’s yogurt drink that night, trying to prod her memory of their childhood memory, then asks if she wants help with this whole singing-with-emotion business. She perks up at the offer, and he says he’ll tell her if she remembers what he’s referring to with the yogurt.

A call brings Jin-gook to the police station, with news of an attempted suicide. The hyung he’d previously lived with has failed the bar yet again and jumped off a rooftop, only to escape with minor injuries.

The hyung assures Jin-gook that he won’t be stupid enough to attempt suicide again, but explains why he’d tried: While living in that teeny rented room had been cramped and uncomfortable, he hadn’t realized until he’d moved back to his hometown that he’d felt alive there. At least he was pursuing a dream.

Lesson of the day learned: don’t fall into the same path. Spurred into action, Jin-gook admits that there’s a song he wants to learn… SNSD’s “Genie.” Hee.

Oh-hyuk tells rest of the Misfit Mafia that they’ll all be learning the SNSD song together, which they balk at â€" they hardly have the time for their own song. Jin-gook offers to learn it on his own, but Oh-hyuk argues that they’re actually doing it for Hye-mi, who is still failing.

The class takes a field trip, arriving outside the chicken shop where Jin-gook’s hyung works. And what ensues… is pure awesome as the four kids perform “Genie” out in the street.

I cannot even tell you how incongruous it is to see serious actor Kim Soo-hyun busting out with the idol thrusting, but I can’t say I don’t like it. And for once, Hye-mi looks to be genuinely having fun. They’re dancing with sheer joy, and that’s a joy to witness.

But making this even better is how this exuberant street performance moves the hyung, now confronted with a living, breathing dream that hasn’t yet given up, and the poignancy of that brings him to tears. And, let’s be honest, me too.

Jin-gook urges his hyung not to give up his dream of becoming a lawyer, and as they share a hug, Sam-dong asks if they’re blood brothers, which makes both guys protest that the comparison to the other is unflattering.

Jin-gook is all, But I’m so pretty, while hyung protests that Jin-gook looks way old for his age. The others agree that Jin-gook does look a little old, which makes me giggle since I recall that being another complaint when Taecyeon was first cast in a high school drama. Hee.

And then, on the bus ride home, we get THIS:

Hye-mi is embarrassed to get caught looking at Jin-gook, her mind mulling over a comment that she’d heard earlier. Curious to know if it’s true, she writes in the glass, “Do you really not know your birthday?”

He says it’s true, though he does know his “fake birthday.” Writing on his own window, his reply reads: “Christmas Eve.”

That makes Hye-mi think back to the little boy she’d met as a child, who’d also admitted to not knowing his own birthday. Feeling sorry for the boy who’d never had a true birthday, she had lit a birthday candle for him in a stack of chocopies, and sang him a special birthday song that her mother used to sing her.

Evaluation day arrives, and the students find out that their evaluations will be based on karaoke scoring. The details of the process are a mystery, because it’s not a straightfoward best-karoke-score-wins system. Last year’s first-place student actually scored a low 72 on the karaoke test, and she can’t even explain why she won.

However, the students are sure the scores aren’t random â€" even though the winner wasn’t the best singer, the students agree that her performance made them feel something. But the secret code remains uncracked.

Oh-hyuk gives his class a final pep talk to remember how they felt when they sang in the street, because that’s when they were most effective. They weren’t acting or putting on a front, but understood the “true taste of singing” in that moment â€" it’s what you feel when you sing for someone else, when you consider what the other person is hearing more than what you’re singing.

Hye-mi makes her way up the stairs, and finds a lovely surprise: The awful spray-painted slurs have been amended, the devilish face painted over into a pretty one, and the former words “Get lost” and “retard” have been transformed into “I’ll protect you” and “You’re the best.”

The kids file into the testing room, and one by one they perform. While Jason sings a 2AM song (“Can’t Let You Go”), Jin-man, watching the proceedings, predicts his score correctly (a 90) and cracks the mystery â€" Teacher Gong is actually basing his scores on the reactions of the students.

That means those who can captivate the other students get higher scores than those who don’t. During Baek-hee’s performance, for instance, three students aren’t paying attention, which means her score is an 85.

Hye-mi takes the mic for her turn, and with Oh-hyuk’s last words ringing in her ears, she asks for a different song at the last moment. The others are confused by the sudden change, but Jin-gook is the first to catch on â€" it’s the special birthday song she’d sung him on that snowy Christmas Eve, perhaps the last time she’d sung a song entirely for someone else rather than herself. Agh, this is so sweet. This is totally wreaking havoc on my Sam-dong love. Curse you, effective love triangles!

Even the teachers are stunned at the genuine expression on her face, and she has tears in her eyes at song’s end. Teacher Gong awards her a perfect score.

Kyung-jin reports to her father that all the kids in the misfit class performed strongly â€" if things continue this way, they may even make it to the upcoming showcase. Director Shi declares that that will NOT do. He wants a conference with Teacher Maeng, who’s in charge of showcase preparations. Cue evil machinations.

After the evaluation, Baek-hee storms off. Hye-mi catches up to her, saying she won’t ask for the pendant back â€" it was always hers: “You won in the audition. I realize that now. I’m sorry for forcing the issue.”

Far from appeased, Baek-hee is offended, thinking Hye-mi is being condescending now that she’s first place. Hye-mi concedes that forcing the issue is a tactic used by people who lack talent, and she knows from experience that it just makes one look foolish. “So let’s not do that with each other from now on.”

Jin-gook finds a crowd gathered around Hye-mi’s vandalized locker, which has been smeared with a blood-like substance. The students find this excessive â€" they recognize that Hye-mi won fair and square â€" and wonder who did it.

Jin-gook knows, and he storms into dance rehearsal to pop In-sung in the face, reminding him that he’d warned him to leave Hye-mi alone. Only, this time In-sung has an alibi and insists he’s not the guilty party.

Something’s not right, so Jin-gook calls to warn Hye-mi that she’s in danger. She’s currently outside taking out the trash, so he alerts Pil-sook and Sam-dong, then races outside just in time to see a girl holding potted plant, poised to drop it on Hye-mi’s head. (I WONDER WHO THAT IS.)

The girl hesitates and pulls back (Baek-hee’s classic maneuver, we might recall), and then musters the nerve. She lets go.

Just as the ceramic pot is about to land on Hye-mi’s head, Sam-dong dashes in to pull her out of harm’s way. They land on the ground and Hye-mi sees the shattered pot around them as she registers what happened.

Worried, Sam-dong confirms that she’s fine, just startled. Sighing in relief, he murmurs, “Thank goodness”… and then keels over, losing consciousness.

Hye-mi calls his name and cradles his head in her hands â€" which she finds covered in his blood.
