Synopsis

25-year old Yuka Orihara (Wakui Emi) is a lovely and cheerful woman. We cannot really see any differences in her appearance, but she was born with a lower IQ than average. She grew up with lots of love of her parents, so she has become a good-natured girl. However, she cannot control her feelings very well, and sometimes she does something too wild, which concerns people around her. While her intellectual ability is low, she has an amazing sense in arts. She has been drawing artistic paintings, and creating unique objects which reflect her pure heart. Her mother (Fubuki Jun) always watches her with love and even her late father, who was also a painter, still influences her. Besides, she has a good friend; Ryo Kanzaki (Takahashi Katsunori). He is her cousin and like a brother to her. But Yuka's peaceful life suddenly changes when her work gets a prize at a competition to which Ryo has entered her work secretly. She is forced to come out of her small world to an unknown world. And she meets a man; Toru Sawatari (Tsutsumi Shinichi), a reporter for a photo-magazine. He used to be a journalist of a newspaper, but was demoted to an associate company a few years ago. But he is determined to return to the paper as he hates the power. Toru, who is very cool and has a past, starts having a business relationship with Yuka. He does not care about her retardation and treats her as an ordinary person. This comes from his indifference, but as Yuka believes he is a 'nice' person, he gets attracted to her purity... --- Fuji TV

Episode 1 synopsis:

This episode opens with a young girl sitting in the middle of a street building a miniature snowman. Two men see her and wonder what she is doing. Liking her looks, they try to pick her up, but Orihara Yuka (Wakui Emi) ignores them and concentrates on finishing her snowman. The guys tell her the light is about to change and pull her up, inadvertently squashing her snowman. Yuka pulls away upset and then another guy steps between her and the other two who run off angry. The light turns green and cars are coming at them (they are still in the middle of the intersection). Yuka’s rescuer grabs her hand and pulls her safely across the street to the other side. After safely making it across, the man turns and walks away with Yuka following after him like a little puppy. The man, Sawatari Toru (Tsutsumi Shinichi), finally turns around and asks her what she wants. When Yuka doesn’t say anything right away, he asks if she knew the two men. Yuka immediately pipes up that she didn’t. She was minding her own business and building a grave when these two men came up and grabbed her and destroyed the grave. This surprises Toru. Yuka goes on to say that a bird had died there earlier and she was so bothered by it that she decided to erect a small memorial for it. After hearing her explanation, Toru asks her if she is stupid. Well, I guess that makes sense. How many people would be so bothered by the death of a bird that they would sit in the middle of a road and build a snowman memorial? Toru turns and walks away and Yuka follows him and calls out to him again. When he turns around, Yuka greets him with a bright smile, points at him and tells him that he is a good person. Toru doesn’t even blink or say anything before turning around and walking away.
Wakui Emi, Takahashi Katsunori

"I met a nice person"

Yuka heads home where she is met by her worried cousin, Kamizaki Ryo (Takahashi Katsunori). He scolds her for making her mother worry because she was out so late all alone. Yuka worries that her mom might be really angry at her, but Ryo tells her not to worry that he will apologize with her. Yuka immediately brightens up, but then she recalls what Toru said about being stupid. Yuka tells Ryo that she was building a grave and he says that sounds just like her. Yuka asks if this makes her stupid. As Yuka walks away, Ryo says that she is not stupid, it just goes to show Yuka’s pure-heartedness (to himself, not to her). They have a fun little snow fight on their way home and Yuka mentions that she met a nice person, but Ryo doesn’t really understand what she said.

The next day, Yuka’s mother scolds her for going out without telling her and then staying out so late. Yuka says that she is listening and promises that she won’t do it again. Her mother says that her words sound nice, but she doesn’t know if Yuka will actually keep her word. Yuka puts the phone away and gives her mom the weather report. No umbrella as there will be sunny skies all day. Yuka’s mom smiles and says okay and leaves. Yuka promptly locks the door behind her and her mom checks it before she leaves (there is a not on the door reminding Yuka to lock it). After her mom leaves, Yuka takes care of the laundry and watches TV. We can see notes and reminders all over the house: on the washing machine, and even the TV remote. After Yuka gets all of her chores done, she heads into a workshop where she does art. She also talks to her deceased father there as well.

While Yuka is working in her workshop, her cousin Ryo is working at a restaurant. He asks his boss about their previous discussion about displaying artwork in the restaurant. The boss asks if Ryo means is cousin’s pieces. Ryo says yes and that Yuka is a wonderful artist. His boss tells him that he can’t make a decision without seeing the pieces, so have Yuka come by one day. This makes Ryo happy and he promises that he will get her to come right away. While Yuka is working on her art and Ryo in the restaurant, Orihara Takako (Fubuki Jun) is working in a hair salon. One customer complains about having only sons and how she really wants a daughter so she can be involved in the wedding. Takako says that she has a daughter, but she isn’t excited about weddings or anything of the like. With Yuka’s slight handicap, is marriage even a possibility? Though I am sure that Takako would love to see her daughter happy, in love, and in a wedding dress under normal circumstances. We then cut to Toru who is being handed a special scoop assignment from his boss to catch some actress with a younger idol. Toru shows no enthusiasm and his boss yells at him to forget about being a news reporter as their news is report the hot gossip. Toru says he will get the job done (but you can definitely tell that tabloid stuff is not what he’d like to be doing â€" wonder what the story is there). Fujiki Asako (Shinohara Ryoko) approaches Toru and asks if he is going on a stakeout. He replies no and she asks if she can come over again. He says that he is busier than she thinks and leaves. Burn.

"Why don't you give Yuka a chance?"

Ryo comes home and tells Yuka the good news. This surprises Yuka and makes her happy. Ryo even says that if things go well, they may be able to even sell her artwork at the restaurant as well. Takako scolds Ryo and tells him not to get her hopes up. Yuka goes to do the dishes and Ryo asks why his aunt doesn’t want to let Yuka be more free and to try new things to see how far she can get â€" to test her limits. Takako then asks if he’s never felt burdened because of Yuka, he immediately replies no, but there have been times when she has troubled him. This proves Takako’s point. Yuka is different, not like others. At first she seems normal, but people are quick to misunderstand her and she’s even been brought home by the police several times for doing odd things. Be that as it may, I think Ryo is right that Yuka should be able to test her limitations and see how far she can go. Isn’t that better than keeping your 25-year-old daughter at home all day, every day? Yuka finishes the dishes and comes back into the living room. She turns on the television and watches the weather. She turns to her mother and cousin with a big smile on her face and announces that it will be sunny again tomorrow.

The next day Yuka goes with Ryo to the restaurant and shows her artwork. The boss is impressed and asks if he can display it making Yuka and Ryo happy. Yuka bows to him and he returns it, but she stays bowed, making the boss uncomfortable so he keeps bowing, but Yuka doesn’t straighten up until someone else comes in. Ryo introduces Yuka to waitress Terao Machiko (Takaoka Saki). Yuka asks if she is a cook to and Machiko replies that she is a waitress. Yuka doesn’t get it and Machiko elaborates that she serves the food. They bow to each other, and like with Ryo’s boss, Yuka stays bowed making Machiko keep bowing. Ryo asks what they are doing, embarrassing Machiko. Yuka then copies Machiko’s movements and speaking â€" kind of like a girl bonding moment if you didn’t know the reason behind it. ;) It was a really cute Yuka moment.

On the bus ride home from the restaurant, Yuka recalls that she forgot to thank Toru for saving her the other night. She keeps repeating that she needs to be home before six when her mom gets off of work. Then she catches sight of Toru and hops off the bus to follow him. Toru is setting up his camera to get the big scoop. When the actress and her lover come out of the building, Toru zooms in and just as he is about to get his shot, Yuka’s head gets in the way. So he doesn’t get the picture needed for the scoop. A smiling Yuka is glad that she found him and she thanks him. An annoyed Toru asks what she wants and she repeats that she is glad that she found him and thanks him again. Toru asks for what and she says for saving her the other day. At first Toru draws a blank, but then he recalls the incident, but acts like he doesn’t. He packs up his camera and Yuka thanks him again and he replies that he doesn’t remember saving her before walking off. Yuka stops him and asks where the bus stop is. She can’t remember where she came from.

Meanwhile, Takako is visiting Yuka’s doctor. Apparently she is worried about Yuka acting on impulse again. The doctor asks what kind of art Yuka has been creating of late. Takako replies that no matter what she makes, Yuka always adds wings to all of her art pieces. The doctor says that over the years people change â€" Yuka will not stay the same. She is a bright girl with a pure heart. The doctor then tells Takako that Yuka knows her limits. She knows that she is different from everyone else, that she can’t understand difficult things, and is not capable of doing as well in school as others do. That being said, the doctor tells Takako that due to Yuka being honest and pure, she might be going through a difficult time right now. This is definitely not what Takako wants to hear. What can she do if Yuka is going through a difficult stage?

Toru takes Yuka to the bus stop where he sits with her. She thanks him for saving her twice now. He replies that he didn’t save her as he had to go to the bus stop anyways. Then a beeping noise starts. Yuka looks all around and Toru takes a pager out of his bag. Yuka asks what it is and he tells her its a pager so people can call him and let him know where he is wanted/needed. Yuka finds this interesting, she calls it a “magic bell” that can let her call him. This surprises Toru and he says that even elementary school students know what a pager is. Toru throws his cigarette butt on the ground and Yuka automatically jumps up and throws it in the ashtray attached to the bus sign. It is really cute when she turns to Toru and says very seriously that he should always put his cigarettes in the ashtray when he is done with them â€" another surprise for Toru. Yuka then asks if the bus approaching is the right one. Toru says yes. Yuka reaches into her pocket and pulls out a candy and tells him that it gives one energy (she says that he looks tired). Toru doesn’t want to take it, but she takes his hand and puts it in. She then smiles and gets on the bus. Toru stares at the candy and when he looks up, there is Yuka waving from the back window with a big smile. He calls her weird â€" he just doesn’t know how to take Yuka who is always doing odd things around him and acting very child-like at times.

That evening the Oriharas receive a phone call from an art foundation. Ryo immediately takes the phone from his aunt and is elated to hear that the art piece he entered won first prize. Ryo hurries over and tells Yuka that her art won a grand prize. Yuka doesn’t understand him and she asks if that is good. He says that it is very good and something that her father had always wanted to win himself. This makes Yuka happy and excited, but definitely upsets her mother who can’t believe that Ryo did this behind her back. When Yuka goes to the workshop to tell her father the good news, Takako asks him what is going on. He tells her that he knew Yuka could do it all along â€" this proves that she has great potential. Ryo is surprised by the look on Takako’s face. Kind of a mix of shock and horror, but you can understand why she might be feeling that. It has nothing to do with her not wanting her daughter to accomplish things and do well, but fear of what will happen to Yuka if she is thrust into this new world.

At the prize meeting, the board are surprised to find out that Yuka has a mental handicap, especially as it is not noticeable to them. Ryo says that is why he didn’t mention it, it wasn’t that big of a deal. But then there comes a problem. Yuka creates artwork freely of her own choice and design, would she be able to create specific pieces desired by the sponsors? Also, they don’t want the news leaked that someone with a disability won the prize. Why? How could that reflect negatively on their organization? A female board member says that can be overcome as she makes great artwork and seems normal. Yuka’s mother does not like this at all and says that she would rather decline the award because if news gets out, then their could be a negative backlash on Yuka, how someone like her could create such art. The woman then turns and asks Yuka what she thinks. Poor Yuka through all of this conversation, really has no idea what is going on, it’s a little too far above her head, but what she does know is that it makes her mother extremely unhappy. That night, Takako sees that Yuka isn’t in her room and goes to the studio where she hears Yuka talking to her deceased father. Yuka wonders if she did the right thing, but regardless, all she wants is to see her mother’s smiling face. This really touches Takako and makes her feel a little guilty. The next day Yuka gets the weather report and catches her mom before she leaves. She tells her that there is a chance of evening showers. Yuka digs out an umbrella an hands it to her mom who says that despite what she said yesterday, she thinks it will be a good idea to take the award. Yuka smiles and agrees.

Toru is told of a big scoop. This time, the winner of a prestigious art award is apparently mentally handicapped, which would make a sensational item for the tabloid. Toru asks if the source is reliable, but the man refuses to give it up and says to trust him and tell no one about this. Toru’s job is just to go there and get the picture of the winner and to see if you can tell that she is mentally handicapped (which is what the foundation is trying to keep covered up). The man goes to leave and there is Asako with her ear to the door. He asks if she overheard and she says that she didn’t mean to (yeah right, she was blatantly eavesdropping). He pulls Asako into the room and tells Toru to take her with him as her female intuition might better be able to pick up the situation. Later that night Toru is in bed and Asako is getting ready to go. She tells him that she would like to hear about his reporter days. He says that her sleeping with him will not be advantageous to trying to jump start her own career as a reporter. Asako replies that she deems who is worthy and who isn’t and leaves. Apparently she doesn’t like him just because he used to be a news reporter.

The day of the press conference for the award ceremony dawns. Yuka is busy learning her script: “Thank you and I will work hard.” The one board lady wishes that Yuka would use her own words to express her feelings about the awards, but Ryo, Takako and the other boards members think this is the best way to keep Yuka’s disability hidden. Asako arrives at the conference and is wondering where Toru is â€" he’s running a little late. More like he’s meandering his way slowly to the press conference. When Yuka goes out on stage she immediately goes back to her mother and cousin, shocked by all the reporters and camera flashes. Ryo tells her to not worry and just smile. Yuka repeats the advice and goes back on stage with a big smile. The conference starts. Yuka basically only says yes or no and when any more complicated questions come up, the MC tells the reporters to look at the provided brochure. Asako immediately picks up that something isn’t quite right. Toru finally makes it and is surprised to see Yuka up on stage. Things start going south when they ask Yuka for her final statement. Instead of saying anything she remains quiet. Her mother worries and Ryo mouths the words to her, but Yuka remains silent, much to the dislike of the reporters. Finally she speaks up and says that she wishes she were a bird. This makes the reporters start asking more question and the MC ends the press conference. As they are walking off stage, Asako asks Yuka when she will become a bird. Yuka searches for the one who asked and smiles saying that she is looking forward to spring. Yuka’s words shocked her mother and Toru who recalled Yuka telling him about building the grave for the bird. He then reaches into his pocket and pulls out the candy she gave him.

Tsutsumi ShinichiMy thoughts: Wakui Emi does a great job at playing the slightly handicapped Orihara Yuka. She displays child-like innocence and disappoint remarkably well, without it seeming too overdone and without us being aware that she is actually “acting,” which is good. Sometimes when people act out people with disabilities they play them to the extremes and make them seem too over the top and I am glad that is not the case in this drama.

I am glad that Takako gave her daughter the chance to show the world her art and to accept the prize, even though she was worried about what would happen. At least she is trying to give her daughter more freedom. It kind of broke my heart when Yuka said she wished she were a bird. Why? Because I get the feeling its because she wants a different kind of freedom and to possibly escape the limited person she knows herself to be.

My only real complaint as of now is Takahashi Katsunori’s acting. He plays her cousin Ryo and I must say that as long as he doesn’t open his mouth in this drama, he’s an okay actor. His Ryo seems way too loud and abrasive and you can tell that Takahashi is acting, which kind of makes me dislike him even though the character of Ryo isn’t all that bad. He is fully supportive and genuinely loves his cousin and wants to see her go as far as she is able with her art and in her life. Though sometimes it seems as if his glances at his cousin are filled with more than familial love. Is he in love with his cousin?

Episode 2 Synopsis/Summary

Episode summary: Yuka is lying in bed and recalling the press conference. Despite the adverted disaster, she is very depressed because she could not remember to say “Thank you very much” and “I will continue to work hard.” Ryo comes over and is very pleased to see the positive write up that Yuka received. He can’t wait for Yuka to see it, but Takako says that she doesn’t want Yuka to see it. This surprises Ryo as he thinks the good things in the article will lift Yuka’s spirits, but Takako says Yuka has never read a newspaper before and she sees no reason for Yuka to change her habits and ways now. Ryo understands this, but you know he would much prefer to share the good news with his cousin.

Yuka is surprised to see Ryo so early in the morning, but continues on with her usual routine, spirits visibly dampened. She watches the weather and then goes to get dressed. While she is changing, the phone rings and it is a reporter asking for an interview which Takako immediately refuses. Ryo asks what’s going on and Takako tells him that its ironic. Yuka’s innocent offhand comment about wanting to be a bird, makes people see her as a genius while just the opposite is true. Before leaving for work, Takako tells Yuka that she is not allowed to answer the phone at all and then tapes up a new sign on the door telling Yuka to not let strangers in the house. Yuka goes to send her mother off and tells her that she understands that she can’t answer the phone. Takako pauses and says something is different and then asks whether or not she needs an umbrella. Yuka says no and Takako leaves. Yuka tips her head sideways and agrees with her mother that something has changed.

Toru’s boss is happy that the other newspapers are toting Yuka as a genius as it means they have an exclusive scoop that will break into a major story once revealed. Toru acts nonchalant about the assignment saying that Yuka could turn out to be normal for all they know. Asako says there is definitely something strange about Yuka and Toru replies that all artists are a little strange, which is definitely true in some cases. As cold and aloof as Toru seems, you can tell that he really doesn’t want to do the article on Yuka. It has nothing to do with journalistic integrity, but rather his feelings that exposing Yuka is wrong. It seems he does have a heart after all.

At work, Takako is bothered by more requests for interviews. This worries her even more. Her boss asks why Takako is working so hard to cover up Yuka’s disability when she has always been open about her daughter’s impediment before. Takako says it is different this time around. It would be different if Yuka was going to be a professional artists, but she’s not. Takako just doesn’t want her daughter’s life to be dramatically changed because of winning the award. Understandable, but you know that initially hiding it will make the big reveal even worse later. Meanwhile, at Ryo’s work, everyone is congratulating him over Yuka’s success and how they are happy to have such a talented friend. This warms Ryo’s heart. Machiko asks the boss if they can throw a party for Yuka and he readily agrees. Ryo shakes off his funk and says he will call Yuka and tell her about it knowing that she would enjoy such a party.

Yuka, still depressed, is at home. The phone rings and Yuka goes to answer it before remembering her mother told her not to. She lets the answering machine pick it up and is surprised to learn the call was for her (it was Toru!). This really confuses Yuka now as she doesn’t know what she is supposed to do. Her mother told her not to answer the phone, but the call was for her. While she is trying to figure this out the phone rings again. This time it’s Ryo. Yuka immediately picks up the phone upon hearing Ryo’s voice. He invites her to the party, making her happy. But before agreeing to go, Yuka asks if she will have to give a speech. Ryo, understanding Yuka’s worry, replies that is not necessary. Yuka immediately says she will go then.

Toru, unable to get a hold of Yuka on the phone, gets his jacket and decides to visit her house. He finds the candy she gave him in his pocket and takes it out, recalling her actions and words that day. He tosses it on his desk and heads out. Yuka is in her workshop talking to her father about all that has happened with the awards and not being able to say what she was supposed to. She goes into her candy jar and thinks about Toru as well. She wonders if he is finally feeling better (she thought he looked tired and unhappy the last time they met). Yuka sets off for the party, repeating her lines for the press conference in a very dejected mood. She is very excited when she runs into Toru again. He tries to tell her that he is there to interview her, but Yuka doesn’t let him. She asks if his magic bell rang because she was thinking about how she wanted to see him. Toru is at a loss, but he finally manages to say that’s not how it works. A dejected Yuka sinks down onto a bench. Toru asks her about the newspaper article and is surprised that she had no idea about it. He takes out the paper and shows it to her. She asks if it says bad things about her and Toru says that it says good things. Yuka smiles at this, relieved that what she thought was a horrible blunder wasn’t all that bad.

She and Toru officially introduce themselves to one another. Yuka asks Toru what he does for a living as the last time she saw him he had a camera. Is he a camera man? A perfect opening for Toru. He says that he works for a publishing company but before Toru can try again to talk about an interview, Yuka remembers that she has a party to go to. She apologizes and gets ready to go. She gives Toru another candy to thank him (for the introduction?). As she heads off, she turns back and asks him if she can see him again. Toru is surprised by this and says yes. This makes Yuka very happy and she goes off saying she will ring his magic bell when she wants to see him again. It is cute as Yuka still doesn’t know you have to physically call the pager â€" that thoughts alone do not make it work. While Toru was talking with Yuka, Ryo and gang were preparing for the party and Toru’s coworker Asako was trying to find out why Toru was demoted to the gossip magazine.

Takako goes to the doctor’s after work again. She talks about the article and then wonders again about Yuka’s bird comment. The doctor tells Takako that all the outside stimulation will be too much for Yuka as she is going through an emotional growth phase and such over stimulation can possibly hurt her. At this time, it is important for both Takako and Yuka to take things slowly. The doctor warns Takako with the new developments Yuka’s feelings will become more complex and she will start to change her views and opinions. Takako asks if she was wrong to tell Yuka that when her father died he became the sky. The doctor says that Yuka was not emotionally ready to handle her father’s death and probably still isn’t, so Takako telling Yuka that is not a bad thing.

Yuka has a fun time at the party and Ryo and the gang are shocked to hear that Yuka already knows about the newspaper article. Machiko is shocked to learn that Yuka can read. I guess his coworkers have known about Yuka all along. Yuka and Ryo enjoy themselves at the party while Toru is passed a document with an initial report on Yuka and her disability (apparently gotten from one of the art committee members). Toru goes out to drink with Asako who asks if he will stake out Yuka’s house. Toru says no as he drinks at night and sleeps during the day. Asako takes out his articles and he tells her to put them away. I really do wonder what the cryptic story is behind his career. The party is still going strong and Ryo notices the time and tells Yuka that she has to head home. Ryo is worried when one of his coworkers asks Yuka to say a few words before she leaves as it was getting quite late. Yuka stands up and finally manages to say the words that refused to come out at the press conference.

The next day Toru goes to visit Yuka again. She is on her way home with supplies for her art and she is happy when she sees him. She begins waving her arms and ends up spilling all of her supplies in the case. She lets Toru into her house and automatically tells him to lock the door right away, which he does. He then notices the signs on the door. He asks if it’s okay for him to be there. Yuka said her mother put it up yesterday, besides, Toru isn’t a stranger. He is her nice friend. Yuka makes coffee and asks him how he takes his, he says black and Yuka keeps repeating it to herself, forgetting that she wanted sugar in hers. She goes to take the whole tray back and Toru says to leave it and just bring the sugar. Yuka goes to do this but then remembers she has some yummy cookies. It’s cute how easily distracted she is. Toru finally screws up the courage to tell Yuka why he’s there.

Takako talks to Ryo on a brief break from work. She tells him that Yuka was very happy and was in a good mood thanks to the party. Ryo then says that Yuka showed up in a good mood and then he says he is glad Takako changed her mind about showing Yuka the article. This surprises Yuka who wonders just who showed the article to Yuka as she definitely did not.

Toru sits down and tells Yuka its his job to write an article on her because of the reward she received. Yuka smiles at his and asks if he will praise her as well. Toru says that he will only praise her work it if it deserves it. Plus, he will tell only the honest truth (he stresses this). I think it’s kind of like him trying to make amends for what he’s about to do by telling the innocent Yuka that he will only tell the truth. Yuka takes him into her studio where he begins photographing her work. He seems pretty drawn to Yuka’s work, especially the sun that she made. Yuka can tell him exactly when each piece was made. She becomes fascinated with the camera and asks if she can try. Toru gives it to her and the first thing she does is take a picture of him, to which he protests. She then begins photographing her own artwork while Toru watches.

Toru then starts photographing Yuka while she works on her latest sculpture. He asks her what she’s doing when she takes paper and starts ripping it up and putting it in water. Yuka says that is how she adds color to the clay. All of a sudden a strong wind blows, scattering the paper. Yuka tries to stop it but then the tiny pieces start flying around and Toru starts taking pictures of Yuka caught up in the swirl of paper. Yuka says he isn’t allowed to use that picture. She then says she is happy as it is the first time she saw Toru smile. Yep. It was his first real smile. While she is picking up the papers, he asks her why does everything have wings. Yuka then asks if its strange. Toru says no and that he likes them. This perks Yuka right up as she gets down whenever she thinks that she is strange and different from others.

Ryo is at work and a coworker hands him ingredients for dinner. Ryo thanks him and the coworker says that he is just like a big brother to Yuka-chan to which Machiko is quick to agree and add her two cents. She thinks it will be interesting when Yuka falls in love because Ryo will act like the disapproving older brother. Ryo smiles at this, but it fades and he says “big brother, huh?” I wonder if Ryo has ever thought of himself as a brother to Yuka or if he was always interested in her as a female? Because he definitely is not happy with the big brother label. And when he finds out about Toru, I just bet his unhappiness will quadruple. And you know he definitely won’t approve of Toru and Yuka ever being in a relationship.

Takako comes home and sees an extra pair of shoes. Thinking it’s Ryo, she goes through the house until she comes to the workshop. Takako is horrified to see a stranger in her home and is even more horrified to learn that he is with a magazine. She yells at him to get out. He says that Yuka agreed to the interview and Takako says that Yuka doesn’t have the capacity to agree. Yuka is upset with how her mother treats Toru and goes to follow him, but her mother holds her back, telling her not to go. Yuka sees that he left behind his scarf and decides to take it to him. Takako again tries to stop Yuka, telling her she doesn’t understand about Toru and Yuka turns the table on her mother and says it is her mother who doesn’t understand. Toru is a nice person and Yuka’s important friend. Yuka then runs out of the house and chases Toru down. She wraps his scarf around his neck and smiles brightly at him while he just kind of looks guilty as Takako is partly right about him.

The next day Ryo, Yuka, Takako, and Toru continue on with daily routines. Toru is the only one who is aware of what is about to happen. Asako delivers the proofs for the next magazine’s issue and the editor immediately turns to the article about Yuka. I don’t know if Toru is responsible for the article content or if it was Asako, but we are only given a few glimpses at what it says. Is hell set to break loose on Yuka and friends?

My thoughts: Please, please don’t let the article be horrible and negatively affect our growing Yuka. Since Toru was so against it, I can’t believe there will be anything over the top, but he definitely seemed guilty and uneasy at the end of the episode. You can also see that no matter how much Yuka surprises and confounds him, she touches him as well. Toru is in need of Yuka’s child-like innocence to get him out of his emotionless funk.

Episode 3 Synopsis/Summary

Everything starts off normally enough, but then Takako sees the magazine with the article on Yuka while Ryo reads it aloud during a break at work. Needless to say, neither one of them are happy. Ryo gets angry, notices the name that went with the picture of Yuka and charges out of the restaurant in search of Toru. When he gets to the office, Ryo asks if Toru is in and Asako tells him that Toru is out. Toru then walks in and Asako stops him. Ryo doesn’t even really talk before he starts throwing punches. He tells Toru that he has no idea what he and Yuka went through. Toru’s coworkers pull Ryo off and threaten to call the cops. Ryo struggles to get free and asks how Toru could do such a thing to Yuka. You can tell that Toru is visibly shaken by what happened with Ryo.

Yuka is out sketching and remembering what happened the night before with her mother. Yuka hopes that her mother will understand that Toru isn’t a bad person. No, Toru is grumpy and anti-social, but he isn’t a bad person at all. Yuka is then approached by two high schoolers who ask if she is Orihara Yuka. She says that she is and the girls say they support her and tell her to work hard. She doesn’t really understand what is going on, but she is warmed by the encouragement.

Meanwhile, Takako goes to the art foundation to figure out what is going on. Takako complains about the article only mentioning Yuka’s handicap versus focusing on her art, which is what Takako was afraid of to begin with. They ask if she wishes to sue Towa publishing and Takako says no as it will only bring more attention to Yuka, hurting her. Takako then says that she wants to sever ties with the foundation to protect Yuka’s privacy and keep things from getting worse. Komiya says that she will make sure that nothing like that happens again. I don’t like this woman. She is too pushy and I think that she might be using Yuka for her own purposes.

Yuka continues on her usual routine. She goes into a book store to look at art magazines (which is right next to Toru’s). People stare at her as they recognize her from the article, but she seems unphased. Meanwhile, at Towa publishing Asako tells Toru that it is not fair that he gets all the blame for the article. Meaning? Meaning that Toru’s boss was unhappy with the blandness of the article and the pictures Toru took. So he went through and chose his own picture and rewrote the article to make it more sensational. So much for editorial integrity. Toru tells Asako that its okay as he is through with the whole ordeal. It’s not okay, but what can he do now that the article has been revised and published?

Yuka is at home making coffee and is about to put sugar in hers when she remembers Toru saying the other day that he takes his black. Yuka imitates his voice and then decides to try drinking it back. She smiles and takes a sip, but her smile is quickly displaced with a frown of distaste as the coffee is bitter (probably a great metaphor for their budding relationship â€" it will be bitter(sweet)). Takako gets a call from Komiya who tells her that the media has been taken care of and she has sent Yuka tickets for a modern European art exhibit. Takako doesn’t really want Yuka to go, but the lady insists that Yuka come and experience the exhibit to help her grow as an artist. Takako thanks her and hangs up.

Ryo and Takako meet on the way home and talk about the article and Komiya from the foundation. Ryo wonders if they can trust Komiya and Takako says that Komiya wants to protect Yuka’s potential and Takako wants to do what is best for her daughter and help her develop her true potential. This both surprises and touches Ryo who has always encouraged Takako to let Yuka develop as far as she can go. Ryo is happy that Takako is becoming more open-minded about Yuka. Takako says that she can’t change that she will die before her daughter so she wants to do her best for Yuka while she is still around. Ryo tells her to stop saying depressing things as aunty still has a long life ahead of her. The two then tease and play there way up the drive.

When they get in the house, Ryo asks if Takako thinks that Yuka saw the article. Takako says that’s impossible because Yuka only ever looks at art magazines. Ryo then asks about Sawatari Toru and if Yuka knows him. Takako nods and says that it is likely that Toru was also the one who showed Yuka the newspaper article. Yuka then comes out and welcomes the two home. She then confuses her mom and Ryo by running out of the room right away. When she comes back, she has a stack of Toru’s magazines. She tells them that she is in it and opens it up. She asks if they say good things about her again. Takako and says that they do. This makes Yuka happy, but she is not thrilled that Toru used the photo she didn’t want him to. She then says aloud that she forgives him. Takako then asks if Yuka saw Toru. Yuka replies no, but she had two girls come up to her and encourage her â€" she deduces that it must be because of the article he wrote. Ryo becomes angry and goes to tell Yuka the truth about Toru. Takako stops him by telling Yuka to promise not to take any more interviews on. Ryo asks why as Yuka needs to know just what kind a person Toru is. Takako says that Yuka does know Toru and honestly thinks that he is a genuinely good person.

Toru’s boss goes to meet either his boss or someone that is part of the art foundation. He tells him that Orihara Yuka’s mother won’t be suing the magazine, which is good for them. He asks who the editor assigned to Yuka and he replies Toru. This makes the man happy as Toru is a very capable reporter. He also informs the editor to continue following Yuka and reporting on her. Why? Why is Yuka being made cannon fodder for the media? Toru’s editor asks why and he is told that following Yuka just might turn into a major project. For why? This surprises the editor.

Takako is worried about letting Yuka go to the art gallery alone, but Yuka assures her mother that she will be fine as she has been there quite often. She then tells her mother how much she looks forward to the exhibit. Meanwhile, the editor calls Toru in to tell him to keep on Yuka. Toru can’t believe that the editor wants to pursue the article on Yuka even further. Toru tells him that he doesn’t think Yuka will trust him again, but the editor insists that Toru do the job and get back in on Yuka’s good graces. The editor says that he knows Toru is angry with the article change, but he had to make it interesting to the readers. The editor then says that Yuka is media gold and that Toru has to keep following her.

Yuka is at the gallery enjoying herself. Komiya watches her from a distance and in comes Toru looking for Yuka who smiles brightly when she sees him which is definitely not the reaction Toru expected. Yuka then approaches him and her smile turns into a frown. She tells him that she saw the article and you can tell that he is visibly uncomfortable and waiting for Yuka’s anger, but she thanks him for praising her (he now knows that people have kept the truth from her about the content). She then chides him for using the picture he promised he wouldn’t, but Yuka has already forgiven him for it. Yuka then asks him to leave with her. Poor Toru is really being thrown for a loop today as he doesn’t quite know how to take Yuka. She puts her finger to her lips and tells him that they shouldn’t talk in the gallery, so they must leave if they want to talk.

They end up going to a nearby zoo. They stare at the giraffes and Yuka says that she likes them because they are so close to the sky â€" that makes her envy them (because they are closer to her father than she is). Toru then replies that she can just go up to a rooftop to be even closer to the sky than the giraffes. Yuka replies that is true, but she can’t go to the roof all the time. She then notices how hard a time giraffes have because they are so far from the ground. This makes Yuka decide that she likes being herself after all. Toru then says it is cold and Yuka immediately runs to go get coffee which is not what Toru meant. More time for Toru to feel guilty and to like Yuka’s innocence even more.

At the restaurant, Machiko asks if the media has calmed down and Ryo replies that it has and then says that his punch must have been effective (LOL). Machiko then comments on how happy Ryo seems when he talks about Yuka. He says yes and is then called over by the boss. Ryo gets up and Machiko notices a tear on his uniform. She tells him to take off his shirt so she can fix it right away. Ryo first refuses her help, but then accepts it. Machiko sits down and happily begins working on it. I knew that she had a crush on him!

On her way back with the coffee a child falls in front of Yuka and she drops one cup of coffee and manages to grab the kid’s balloon before it flies away. The kid thanks her, but then he scolds her for dirtying the zoo. Yuka is upset that she dropped the coffee and Toru smiles at the incident (yay another smile). She tells him that his coffee was luckily fine. She then gives it to him and he throws his cigarette on the ground. Yuka bends down and picks it up repeating what the child told her about dirtying the zoo (heehee, classic!). The two then go to a coffee shop and Yuka says that she has only been to such places with Ryo. Toru is amazed at how happy Yuka is. Yuka states that she is happy and this surprises Toru and really seems to affect him. He then asks if she is always happy â€" doesn’t people’s remarks hurt her? Yuka replies that they do hurt, but everyone goes through such times. There will be good and bad times. Yuka then looks intently at Toru and asks if he is happy. The questions surprises Toru and I think the honest answer for Toru is no. She then reaches out and touches his face (near the bruise that Ryo left at the corner of his mouth) and says that it looks painful. She hopes that he will be better soon. Yuka then smiles and takes out another candy to give to Toru (this time green). Asako is nearby and while waiting to cross the street she notices Yuka and Toru. She does not look pleased at all to see the two together. Yuka says that she needs to leave as she is happy and feels like working. She then asks Toru if he will visit her workshop again. He says he will and she makes him pinky swear before leaving.

At home, Ryo asks about the art gallery. Yuka says that she went by herself, which is true, she only met Toru there. Ryo said that if he had the day off then he would have gone with her. He then proposes that on his next day off they go out and have fun together. Yuka agrees and Ryo says it’s a “date,” the two then do a pinky promise and Yuka notices something different between the promise with Ryo and the promise with Toru. The difference being that Ryo is just a friend while Toru is a guy that Yuka is slowly, but surely starting to fall in love with. Meanwhile at the restaurant, Ryo’s coworkers are drinking and lamenting that Ryo left. One coworker suggest he has a date, but no, he is with Yuka. The boss then said that Ryo had a chance to go to France to cook, but he turned it down because of a girl. The boss first thought it was his girlfriend, but he now thinks that its all because of Yuka. Machiko doesn’t really like to hear this. I think she is starting to become suspicious that Ryo just might think more about his cousin than she originally thought. Yep, the guy is in love with his pure-hearted cousin.

And speaking of women who are unhappy with their men being around Yuka, Asako is visiting Toru who is not happy to see her there, probably as he is still a trifle bruised from his encounter with Yuka. Asako is not happy with Toru’s cold reception (it’s not that surprising as he is usually always cold anyways). She picks up his assignments and looks them over. On top is Yuka’s schedule and on the bottom is a request to get a comment from the mother of a 17-year-old murder and rapist. Toru really doesn’t seem to like the job of getting the comment from the mother, I wonder if it has anything to do with his past or the incident that got him demoted. Asako snottily says that Toru will of course take Yuka’s case over the other one. Toru takes the paper from Asako and sits on the bed. Asako then mentions she was in Ueno on an errand and saw him with Yuka and it appeared like they were on a date. Jealousy rears its ugly head. Toru then yells at her to get out. She deserved that one.

Yuka puts her zoo ticket in her treasure box and recalls her happy time with Toru. She finally finishes her sculpture and decides that it would look nice in Ryo’s restaurant. She packs up the sculpture and heads on over. Meanwhile, Ryo is getting upset at a customer who is talking about the article and how he wants to meet Yuka for himself. As he goes to leave, Ryo gets ready to launch himself at the customer, but is held back. He then demands that they get rid of the magazine the customer left there. Asako asks the editor why they have to pursue Yuka and the editor says as a newbie, Asako doesn’t need to know. Meanwhile Toru is trying to get a statement. The mother ignores everyone, but Toru goes to the door and then asks if it isn’t the mother’s fault as she committed a crime first by abandoning her son. This incites her to give him a statement. Again, you can tell that this incident really seems to hit close to home for Toru. I really want to know what happened. Will we?

Yuka happily walks to the restaurant. She reaches the restaurant where she overhears Machiko talking with a fellow coworker, Jun about Toru’s article. She learns that it wasn’t a good article like she thought and mentioned her disability. Yuka drops the statue and leaves. She walks listlessly in shock while Toru is complimented for getting the mother to finally speak. According to Toru, the reporters and he are just as bad as the mother. They are not good people. The other reporters go off and Toru smokes alone. Ryo finds out that Yuka overheard Machiko and Jun’s conversation. They apologize and Ryo runs out to find his cousin who is standing at a newstand looking at a copy of the magazine.

Night falls and wouldn’t you know that Yuka manages to find her way to Toru where he is still staking out the apartment still. He is surprised to see Yuka there. She asks him about the article, how she heard it talked about her negatively. She tells Toru that she will believe him if he says that it isn’t true. Toru breaks down and says that it is all true. The article only mentions her disability and says nothing of her art at all. He then says that she is a caged bird with broken wings and ta that people can’t be happy all of the time. Toru is right, but it seems almost too much. He didn’t have to go that far. Yuka is happy that Toru told her the truth which her mother and Ryo have concealed from her. Toru then leaves as the other reporters notice Yuka. He hesitates when he sees them begin to swarm her, but then he turns around and leaves Yuka to the swarm. Poor Yuka! Will Ryo save her from the reporters that Toru left her to?
