Episode Summaries
Episode 1: Expect the Unexpected

This season begins with the auditions being held all over Asia, starting with Manila city, then Singapore, followed by Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and finally Bangkok. Tons of hopefuls turned up with the hope that their lives might change for the better. Some memorable moments included Malaysia's Nasha Lee, who weighed in at almost 250 kgs. Even the first and current Asia's Biggest Loser's (David Gurnani) father walked through the doors and auditioned for TBLA. Judging the auditions were Dave Nuku and Kristy Curtis; David Gurnani replaced Dave Nuku for the auditions in Jakarta.

After an arduous search, 16 people were eventually chosen out of the thousands who auditioned, including Thailand's Patty Soon (one of the heaviest competitors ever). The 16 contestants were then sent to Putrajaya's luxurious IOI resort, where they were greeted by this season's host, Marion Caunter. Upon arrival, the contestants, already exhausted by the walk to the resort, were forced to do a challenge on the spot. The fastest male and female to win the challenge will become the captains of their respective teams (at that point, the teams had not been selected yet ). In the end, Singapore's Raj and Fish edged out everyone else, with Leonardo coming close with Raj. After the challenge, the contestans were then sent to the place they'll be living in for the next few weeks. Upon arrival, the contestants were amazed by the grandeur of the mansion. After everyone had picked their rooms, Raj and Fish decided upon which trainer they wanted. Raj made it shown to Fish that he wanted Kristy to train him, but allows Fish to pick Kristy instead. In truth, Raj had already picked Dave to be his trainer.

Then, the captains and the other contestants went outside. The captains revealed their choices: Raj picked the Blue Team while Fish selected the Red. Then they began picking their teammates. In the end, Leonardo, Rico, Yana, Desiree, Shakira, Jonathan and Peachy were chosen by Raj and Lori, Patty, Genghis, Scott, Manjit, Saw and Nai were chosen by Fish. The teams then settled into their mansion when the trainers, Dave and Kristy showed up and summoned them.

The teams proceeded to the gym or as Rico described it as " a torture chamber". Marion then showed up and brought the contestants to the weighing room and started weighing them. The weights were a shock to many, but more importantly, a wake up call to everyone. Red Team's total weight was 1171kg and the Blue Team's weight totaled up to 1130kg. Marion then announced that by the end of the week, two contestants will be going home.

Training began in the Biggest Loser Asia, with both teams seemingly having their fair share of hard workers and slackers. Kristy describes Genghis to be ' a female princess' being that he constantly complains. During the training, Yana from the Blue team had a breakdown while on the spin bike, and Red Team's Saw collapsed on the treadmill and was flung of it. Nonetheless,he got back up and started walking again on the treadmill in what Kristy described as ' a Saw-like manner'. Later, the teams were shown to be back in the mansion where Dave and Kristy introduced them an integral tool in weight loss and stressed the importance of good eating habits and to know the amount of calories in your favorite foods. Genghis was caught with surprise when he saw the details of a cheeseburger. “Whoa, a cheeseburger has 308 calories, and that’s just a cheeseburger, and I have ten of those."“You have to walk an hour just for that one cheeseburger that you ate. I don’t think it’s worth it.” Genghis added.

At the weigh in, the blue team results were relatively poor compared to last season: Raj, Jon and Leo lost 7kg each, Shakira, Yana and Peachy lost 6kg each, while Desiree and Rico lost 4 and 5 kg respectively. The Blue team was surprised by Desiree's low weight loss(-4kg) but not by Rico's(-5kg), saying that ' Rico complains a lot in the gym and doesn't give it everything'. The Red Team beat the Blue's total weight loss of 48kg by a landslide. Fish, Manjit, Lori and Patty each lost 7kg, Genghis lost 10kg, Nai and Saw lost 8kgs each while Scott lost 15kg, making him the biggest loser of the week, totalling the Red teams weight loss to 69kg. As a twist, the winning team was decided by percentage loss. The Blue team's loss of 4.31% just wasn't enough to beat the Red team's loss of 5.89%. As a result, the 2 people from the Blue team with the lowest percentage of weight were eliminated. Desiree and Rico fell under the sword, both expressing disappointment with being the first to go home but were proud of their achievements here on the Biggest Loser Asia.

Notes

1. During Week 1, Marion told the contestants that the two people with the lowest percentage of weight loss on the losing team would automatically be eliminated. The first competitive weigh in saw the Red Team win and Rico and Desiree from the Blue Team were sent home and there was no voting.

2. During Week 2, The Red Team reached a hung vote between Manjit and Patty, and according to the Biggest Loser Rules, the Blue team had the power to vote anyone out; which in this case was Scott.

THREE FINALISTS
NAI/RAJ/GENGHIS

THE LAST BLUE BOY

With Leonardo eliminated, Raj, the last remaining blue team member, is visibly demoralized and lonely, claiming they were the dynamic duo He says, “He will push me and I will push him and we will achieve the best we both can. Now, I have no roommate.”

In the next room, the remaining red team members, Nai, Lori and Genghis, remain determined to make the finale. Genghis emphasizes how much they will crush Raj and how it boils down to karma,. He adds, “Since day one Raj has been thinking about himself and now it’s coming back to him with full force.”

Raj tries to take Leonardo’s departure in his stride claiming that the red team does not scare him and claims, “I will put in all the effort I can muster and more if I have it in me to not go below the yellow line this week.”

CREAM OF THE CROP

The next day, Dave and Kristy visit the remaining contestants. After taking one look at Raj, Dave shares, “Automatically, I know Leo is no longer with us and he’s been eliminated from the competition,” he shares his disappointment in Leo’s departure further and adds, “Saying goodbye to Leo is difficult for me. Its like I lost a friend.”

Kristy tells them that they are the “cream of the crop” and is delighted at how Lori is the “Final female, the oldest in the competition, and still here fighting.”

Dave informs the contestants that they are in for two surprises and wants them to get changed.

Genghis ecstatically questions, “ No work out? I’m first up the stairs!”

Lori remarks wryly, “ This is the fastest he ever moved. Look at that!”

A TREAT

The final four are welcomed by the head hairstylist of Tony and Guy KL and find out that they will each be receiving a makeover.

A relieved Nai is glad that he can finally get a proper haircut and shares, “The last time I got a haircut was almost three months ago. Now I look like a beast.”

Lori, a self-proclaimed control freak, decides to “sit back and see what happens” while a serene Genghis remains oblivious to his surroundings and enjoys his time getting his hair washed while praising his hair stylist, “ John, you are good.”

New to the experience, Raj shares, “It has always been just getting my hair cut at a barber shop in 10 minutes, this is my first time getting my hair cut by professionals.”

At the end, the final four are happy with the results, and Lori exclaims that she is “ready to party” with Genghis chiming in, “ I’m ready to conquer the woman with my hair cut”. Just as they are leaving, they are informed that they have yet another surprise waiting for them back at the resort.

MADEOVER MODELS

A photographer from The Studio Singapore greets the final four back at the Palm Garden Resort and reveals to them that they are in for a makeover and photo shoot session.

As each of the contestants get changed for their photo shoot, they marvel at how much weight they have lost.

Nai manages a “Wow,” after looking in the mirror

Lori is in disbelief as she says, “I still can’t believe I fit into this dress.”

Genghis goes first for the photo shoot and claims that it is his first time. The photographer puts him at ease by revealing that he always likes a first timer.

Genghis proves to be a natural model and loves every minute of his shoot, remarking coyly that his natural ability just came out.

The photographer does not believe that it is Genghis’s first time modeling and compliments Genghis throughout the entire photo shoot. A delighted Genghis says, “I feel like a star.”

While Nai, Lori and Genghis take in the experience of the makeover, Raj gives himself a reality check and comments, “All good things must come to an end and the reality is that only three people are going to make it to the final three.”

ALL TIME HIGH

Marion greets the final four at Asia’s premier climbing gym, Camp 5 at One Utama Shopping Centre where the final challenge of the competition, a rock climbing challenge, will take place. She says, “ I do hope you are not afraid of heights.”

Raj, as it turns out, is afraid of heights and shares, “I started to feel a bit light-headed.”

Marion explains the dynamics of the final challenge, informing the final four that they will have to climb a 14-metre wall, anchored down on the ground by a safety officer. A yellow flag awaits them at the top of the wall and the first person to grab the yellow flag will win the challenge. Prior the challenge, the final four have to answer a question in 30 seconds which ultimately shape up to their chances of winning the challenge.

With Nai winning the past few individual challenges, Lori, after hearing about the question, breathes a sigh of relief and says, “There is a small glimmer of hope that maybe someone other than Nai may have a chance of winning this challenge.”

“Write down the total combined number of kilos lost since the start of the competition, 12 weeks ago. That includes all the 16 contestants including yourselves who have all participated in the weigh in since the beginning,” reveals Marion.

Genghis, stunned by the question, comments, “Who has that kind of memory? Even Raj, the human calculator would have a hard time.”

Lori reveals her answer to be 584 kg, followed by Nai who writes a whopping 1350kg, then Raj with a safe 250kg and lastly Genghis who writes 500 kg. Marion reveals the answer to be 382kg, which means Genghis, will receive a 20 second head start for the challenge followed by Raj, Lori and finally, Nai.

Nai, undaunted by going last, confidently adds, “I don’t really care if I lose that quiz challenge because I am confident in my rock climbing.”

Genghis kick starts the challenge with a 20 second lead with Raj and Lori tailing closely behind. Nai falls off the wall within seconds proving to struggle for the first time, much to Marion’s surprise.

Genghis slips off the wall, putting Raj in first place. However, it is not long before Nai catches up and Raj eventually falls off leaving Nai to win the individual challenge yet again.

Nai receives a TRX suspension trainer and a 3-day getaway in Phuket. With this, Marion tells the contestants that she will see them at the most pivotal weigh in of the season.

FINAL GUIDANCE

Back at the mansion, Kristy and Dave tell the final four that they will soon be going out to the real world, “Dave and I will not be there to hold your hand and spoon feed you anymore,” says Kristy. She reinforces the importance of the biggestloserclub.asia and asks that they think of it as their online personal trainer.

THE ‘LOSE BIG’ PROGRAM

The final four head to the Fitness First Platinum at Empire Subang Jaya. Dave informs them that their target calorie burn for the ‘Lose Big’ session will be 1000 calories. He emphasizes the fundamentals of the ‘Lose Big’ Program by stating, “work with partners, people who have the same goals as you so that’s what we’re going to you right now”.

At the end of the vigorous training session, Dave comments, “This is just the beginning of a whole new life for all the contestants.”

A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE

At the final training session with Kristy and Dave, Dave tells the contestants that they are going to do something special for the last session. Kristy informs the final four that they will have to carry backpacks each carrying the amount of weight lost in kilograms since they started this competition. “So Genghis, you have 44kg in that backpack that you’ll have to carry,” says Kristy.

Genghis tries to get out of it by joking back, “Actually it is 44 pounds.”

Raj, Nai and Lori have 39kg, 37kg and 27kg to carry respectively.

The contestants embark on their walk with Kriisty and Dave by their side spurring them on. Each of them reflect on their journey throughout this competition.

Raj comments, “Carrying 39kg on my back, I’m amazed that my spine didn’t snap in half. The weight was eating me away. Every step was harder than running on the treadmill at speed 12 or something.”

Genghis reflects on his journey, “I feel like I’m carrying a little Genghis. I lost 44kg in less than three months. It’s unbelievable. In the early weeks I really hated last chance training and now I’m actually doing it. This journey has taught me so many things. Just how to live life the right way. I feel like I have a second lease of life. I really appreciate this and I’m very thankful.”

“All the pain was definitely worth it to be the last woman standing. I always expected to be here and came with the intension of making it to the finals,” says an appreciative Lori who then adds with a hint of nervousness, “One more weigh in to go.”

A contemplative Nai shares, “This journey is definitely the highlight of my life. From the beginning, I never thought I would make it this far. Having accomplished all this, it’s a great feeling and there is nothing more than I would want than to win this.”

Raj looks back on his progress throughout the competition, “I remember coming here looking like a ball. I only had one thing in mind and that was to survive in this house as long as I can, play the game as it is still a competition.” He remembers the elimination of his fellow blue team members, “Losing members one by one was upsetting.”

Determined to make it to the finals, Raj adds, “I’m not just doing this for myself, I’m doing this for the entire blue team. I pray to god I can be in the final three.”

FINALE DECIDERS

Tensions run high as the contestants’ make their way for the last weigh in before the finale. Tonight, one of them will barely miss out on being in the finale by getting eliminated.

The last woman standing, Lori is up first. She loses a disappointing kilo, which puts her total weight loss percentage to 1.11%.

Up next at the mercy of the scale is Nai who manages to lose an astounding 6kg, which brings his weight loss percentage at 6%. Confident that he would not be falling below the yellow line, he hopes the worst for Raj and remarks, “ I still hate him and I still want him out.”

Genghis cheers Nai on and goes up next. He loses a decent 3kg bringing his weight loss percentage to 2.54%.

It seems as though the end of the road is near for Raj as he shares, “Seeing Genghis in second place makes me extremely nervous. I feel like I’m going to go up on that scale and lose 2kg, fall below the yellow line and see a huge grin on Nai and Genghis’s face.”

Raj steps up on the scale and in an unexpected twist, loses a life-saving 5kg bringing his weight loss percentage to 4.76%. An elated Raj shouts for joy and like Nai, makes a smug remark, “Slowly but surely whittling away the former red team members feels good.”

Falling below the yellow line for the first time is a demoralized Genghis,“ It really hurts because I want to be in control of my own destiny but what can I do.”

It will be a tough decision for Nai as he has to vote for one of his former teammates.

THE LAST THREE STANDING

Tensions run high at the most important elimination of the competition, and Raj is first to reveal his vote.

He says, “The person I am voting for is slightly two faced. With everyone being so competitive, sometimes the want to win makes people do things they don’t want to do. I have nothing personal against this person. My vote is for Genghis.”

Marion reminds the final four that should there be a tie in the votes, the person with the lowest weight loss percentage for that week, Lori, will be the one going home.

Nai is up next, “At the end of the day I prefer not to make decisions and I let the numbers do the talking. I voted for Lori,” he reveals.

With this, Lori’s journey at The Biggest Loser ends and she bids her fellow contestants farewell.

ON THEIR OWN

Back at the mansion, Kristy greets Genghis with a life size printout of him when he weighed 162kg. Kristy admits to Genghis that he was a nightmare to work with.

“Genghis for me has been one of the most difficult contestants to train so I’m actually going to give myself a pat on the back because I have done a great job,” she says.

Genghis brings Kristy to tears by thanking her profusely for saving his life, “Kristy has been my saviour, trainer, confidant and conscience. She really spent a lot of time and investment in me and I thank her very much from the bottom of my heart,” he even adds, “If I do have a daughter, I might call her Kristy.”

As Genghis leaves, Kristy comments that Genghis is a dark horse in the competition and may even be one to beat.

Dave waits for Raj back at the mansion and greets him with his life size printout of him at 144kg. Raj comments that the picture makes him look drunk and thanks Dave for making him feel happier, healthier and physically fitter.

Having thanked Dave, Raj shares, “Reality is reality. You have to go back and face the real world on your own. You cannot have somebody holding your hand and running your life for you. It’s about time to take your destiny into your own hands.”

Finally, Kristy and Nai meet back at the mansion. Kristy congratulates him and comments that he looks fantastic.

“I work this hard for myself, for the red team and for you,” he replies.

Kristy comments, “If there is one person who deserves to be in the final three it definitely is Nai.” They both reflect on the importance of weight loss and talk about Nai’s father whom he lost to obesity related issues.

Genghis, Raj and Nai pack their bags and head home while reflecting on their incredible journey. In the words of Genghis, “All great journeys come to and end. We need to have an end to have a new beginning and although this chapter of my life is over, it doesn’t mean my journey is.”

The three finalists will meet again, face-to-face at the finale and crowning of The Biggest Loser Asia 2.
